Fifty Plus (50+) - Annual PIE Ride.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Only a week to train for it so get the maps out and find that pie on your ride for next saturday.
3rd Saturday in September is the date and rules are simple. Do a ride- Eat PIE and post a pic. For newcomers to cycling- distance is not a problem but those of us that have the legs for it- 15 miles is the recommended distance.
Main thing is to get out- and eat the traditional 50+ form of nourishment- and for those of us that get greedy- do 30 miles to work off the extra calores.
Attachment is of my 2006 Pie- Autumn Fruits with Custard.

Will you be doing this on the fixed gear? This would be a perfect combination for the 50+ pie ride:) Of course we will need pictures.

I think I can bypass on the training. I'm sure eating 6 donuts on a ride qualifies as training:D

And, don't forget - the traditional pie is BLUEBERRY!

Oh dangit - I only have a week and so mush to do to be in proper form for the pie ride. I better start making a list:
1) Buy a pair of Sidis
2) Have those custom wheels built
3) Buy/Break in a Brooks saddle
4) Get the fitting and custom built steel frame
5) Get those Bibs.
6) Can't forget the wool socks
7) Buy that Incredibell
8) Clean my chain - one link at a time
9) Make sure I am well stock in a full range of Hammer nutrition - don't want to bonk/could be a hard 15 miles.
10) Fit up the HRM, Speedometer, Cadence, Powermeter and GPS.
11) Make sure the Paniers are well fastened and load them up with every Park tool in the catalog - you never know what will happen - 15 miles is a long way. Make sure not to forget the torque wrench again...
12) Read every book Joe Friel ever wrote and start that training routine.
13) Refit those clipless pedals and make sure to fall a few times just to make sure I know how.
14) Map the ride on at mapmyride, bikely, and bokeroutetoaster - make sure they all agree and plot the elevation profile making sure to note any grade over 1%.
15) Dust off the camera, clean out the memory so I can take a pictures every 1/4 mile.
16) Oh yea - get that Colonoscopy
Wow - I have a lot to do - I wish you had warned me a year ago this was coming, now I have so little time. Did I forget anything?

I'm scheduled to drive a sag vehicle for a century ride next Saturday. If I promise to eat two pieces of pie does that count?

You forgot to get that custom steel frame painted white, it will make your ride sooooo much smoother and faster.

How time flies. Well, I'll have to get ready. Last time I had to settle for Apple pie. But it was good. Count me in. :thumb:
We're in! I'll notify the group.... we'll be riding with them, 40 miles next Saturday, and we always stop for food.

I'll try to participate.
But while I must like about 40 different kinds of pie, blueberry is not one of them.
Besides, blueberry got few votes in the pie poll.
Doe a little Debbie apple pie at the convenience store count? I really don't like to stop at restaurants on my rides but I don't mind a convenience store and the Little Debbies really are good. I promise I will eat plenty of key lime pie the next time Mrs. Romad makes one.

Only if you ride a Wally Mart bike to get it.
Incidentally, you have low standards even for 50+.

Hey - I resemble that remark. Last year I had to settle for a Stewarts equivalent to the Little Debbie pie. This year I am hopeing my pie ride will pass by Lake side farms: http://www.lakesidefarmscidermill.com/
A Wally Mart bike? If my Litespeed could reply to that comment I wouldn't be able to print it here in this family friendly forum. Fine, I will stop and have a piece of "real" pie.

Do me a favor. Warn me if you ever bring your Lightspeed near St Louis. I'm thinking I might need to take some defensive measures.

Ingredients (listed in order of amount included) of the Little Debbie Apple pie:
Flour
Corn Syrup
Water
Vegetable Shortening
Sugar
Evaporated Apples
(Apples are the last ingredient listed before getting down to the 2% or less of the total line, so they are probably around 4%-5% of the total weight)
19g of fat, 33g of sugar. But few pies would be much better.
On the up side, they meet "Vegan" standards as they have no animal products.

That's like if you were playing NFL football, and didn't like the ball, and decided to play with a volleyball.
The LEAGUE would never stand for it.
BLUEBERRY PIE is the football. Other pies are volleyballs. If you want to play volleyball, join the Road Forum!!

I am not going to choke down a blueberry pie just for you DnvrFox!
I am willing to down a slice of raspberry, boysenberry, or blackberry. Or even bumbleberry. Or mixed berry - which sometimes has some blueberries.
Or even a blueberry muffin - even though I'd rather have a cranberry & walnut muffin.

I hate to admit this, but I agree on the blah-ness of blueberry pie.
But I'm happy to try another sort.
Or would chocolate brownies do at a pinch? I do make a seriously good chocolate brownie.

Thanks for that link Bluesdawg. My pie recipe is pretty much the same thing but believe I noticed an error I had with the crumb topping. Was using twice as much sugar as flour, no wonder the wife thought it was too sweet.

I'm willing to eat the pie - actually, more than willing. My problem is that I might have to pay somebody to ride the 15 miles for me. Since it's already going to cost me around $30.00 or $40.00 out of my own pocket for the privilege of sagging the century ride, I don't think that I should have to do that.

RR and I are doing a Tandem TT next weekend and will try to "step up to the plate", (pie plate that is) after the TT.
Much as it pains me to say it-I'm not in. Due to some continuing leg problems I've been pieless for a month. Hoping to start riding again in a couple of weeks. Hope springs eternal!

My club was trying to organize a pie ride for Saturday, but between soccer schedules, family obligations and out of town rides, we couldn't come up with a time when more than a couple of people could make it. So I'll just ride near home with my wife and son. I had picked up a frozen cherry pie to supplement the blueberry pie another club member will make. Looks like my pie will be cherry this time. Get over it, Dnvr. ;)

Despite numerous attempts, there has never been a consensus reached on the narrow criterion of blueberry only for a qualifying pie. Viva la choice! :thumb:

Don't know about honor but I can definitely attest to the taste, or utter lack of taste, within this group.
