Classic & Vintage - Ross Barracuda...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I found, well, my buddy has it for sale, an original Ross Barracuda musclebike with the 3-speed shifter on the top tube, etc. It's in original shape, needs some love, but is pretty much ready to go.
I never had a musclebike, too young- missed by about 5 years I guess- and this is a really cool way to get one without forking over HUGE $$$$ for a Schwinn.
What's this thing worth?
Anyone know of any other sites dealing with these things? I've tried Oldroads.
Thanks as always.

Not vintage. repro of early muscle bikes. Sorry man.
It's definitely vintage. Schwinn books talk about those that came in to challenge their Stingray series, the Ross Baracuda included. The bike doesn't have a Ross headtube badge, it's "Chain Bike Corp" which apparently later became Ross- according to OldRoads site info.
I'm still searching though...

Maybe not as 'vintage' as an early Sting Ray or Krate, but I would think that it is still representitive of the style bike from that time period.
Schwinn was not the only manufacturer back then either. Where I grew up, the local bike shop sold Ross, Rollfast and Columbia, the Schwinn dealer was 20 miles away. Most of us had non-Schwinn's since they were less expensive and the dealer was local. One could have gone and gotten a Schwinn, but that also meant that many 'Schwinn only' parts were farther away.
I still have a few of the old late 60's, early 70's Rollfast and Ross 'muscle bikes' in the garage, one day I'll get around to getting them back in shape.
The bottom line is, if you like the bike, or it holds memories of your childhood or what ever, go for it. If your looking for a more valuable collectable, I'd have to say that a Schwinn would be the best bet right now. But one never knows what the next fad will be, but I doubt Ross will be of any serious value, even down the road, however, some of the more popular brands with a longer history could eventually gain in value.
