Eastern Canada - Hilly Hundred

Did the Bancroft Hilly Hundred yesterday for the second time. It's known as “Ontario’s Toughest Century Ride”, and the 160km length includes over 2000 meters of climbing with many 13% climbs. It is very well organized with great food and scenic views. If you're looking for other challenges you might want to check out the Halton Hilly Hundred, http://www.cyclecanada.com/HHH.html I haven't done the 'official' route yet, but I've climbed all of the hills on individual rides and some of them are pretty fun!

I don't think anyone does a supported ride over that route any more though.

Families cottage is in Bancroft and I have done some of the route but not all. It is a very humbling experience. I know a few guys who say yeah that ones off the list and I won't be back others love it. I want to give it a go next year.

I have a 161 km route (out and back) between Milton and Dundas which uses most of those climbs - with 2300 metres of climbing in total. By comparison, The Hilly Hundred has, I believe, 1100 metres over 100 km.

Actually the Bancroft Hilly Hundred has four routes of 60km, 80km, 160km, and 240km. Each is a loop route. The 160 has about 2500 meters of climbing, I'm not sure of the others.

Sorry, I was referring to the Halton Hilly Hundred for my comparison.

2008 was my first year seriously riding. I put a lot of time in riding the Hills of Northumberland County. The Bancroft Hilly Hundred was my first century ride. Great Challenge, Scenic, very well organized.
In 2009 I would like to take an hour off my time. (Goals are great motivation)
I will be there again this year.

The Bancroft Hilly Hundred web page has posted this years ride.
It will be the same as last year... except in the opposite direction.

Time to start thinking about the Hilly Hundred again.
The Hotel is rented. New tires, chain and brake pads hanging in the basement ready to be installed.
I am going to ride the Oshawa Century to prepare for this.

This years Hilly Hundred was a great ride. I was trying to find some pictures and some news about the Bancroft Hilly Hundred and notice that the "official we page is gone" from the trips and trails web page.
Should I be reading something into this?

Does anyone plan to ride the Hilly Hundred this year?
Road construction has extended the distance to 190KM.
Maybe I will ride around town after the ride to get to the 200KM mark.
One good thing is that the last 20 or 30 KM has been changed to a different road. Some called this the march of death. The Deltor road is now used.
That last part on HWY #28 was worse than any hill out there.
What a great ride. I plan my year around this event.
240KM next year?

Outstanding ride. Great volunteers, perfect weather, and the Sword turned out to be a nice place to stay despite all the glowingly negative reviews on Tripadvisor from last year. Next year on the tandem. (No bull.)
Some grousing was overheard about the short section on Highway 60 from the Wilno lunch stop into Barry's Bay. I didn't think the traffic was all that bad for my two-man partnership but a large group could have had some conflicts I suppose.
The Detlor Road finish was a great detour off Highway 28, and had the added bonus of a very scenic and pleasant run north on Highway 62 into town.
Kind of too bad that everyone just jumped into their cars and vanished as soon as they finished, no socializing other than within groups that came up together. But Bancroft is a long way from anywhere so I can understand the disincentive to linger and tarry.

Definitely to be the centrepiece of my cycling calendar, for sure!

This is my third Hilly Hundred yet and so far this is the most enjoyable course. Deltor road was a perfect fix to the "March of Death" during the return on HWY 28.
Millennium park ending has been much more a social event after the ride. Although the Curling Rink would be nice if it was raining.
What a ride though. This ride is on my mind all year long.
Something I won't miss for a long time.
