Had a great trip, here's the report. (http://pages.suddenlink.net/tripsite/SanJuan.html)
Interesting: No on one Lopez island locks their bikes. For example, there are relatively new TREK mountain bikes that are left outside, unlocked, 24 hours a day. I couldn't bring myself to leave ours unlocked, however.

Looks like someplace I would like to ride, thanks for the trip.
Wow, that sounds like a great trip. I really enjoyed the way you told it too. My wife never reads BF but I am going to show her your trip. What gearing do you have on your bike?

Looks like a great trip!
FYI, the 79-year-old biker you met is wearing a jersey from the 2008 RAMROD ride - 150 miles, 10,000 feet of climbing in one day. He's got to be a pretty strong rider to be wearing that jersey...

I enjoyed your bike-a-logue very much. We went to Saturna (I see it on your map) in 1999 (no bike riding), so I enjoyed your photos very much. Nice write up: Brief, humorous and informative. Thanks for posting.
"Port Something".....is Port Orford.
They lift the boats in and out of the ocean as needed since there is basically no room to moor boats in the tiny 'harbor' area....really just a barely sheltered part of the ocean.

Zoom in and you will see there is no boat docks in the cove....and the northwest wind blows very hard along that stretch of the coast.

The Moran State Park lake photo is perfect.
It is a great place for an extended bike trip (and looks like you enjoyed great weather).

What gearing do you have on your bike?
My largest cog in the back has 26 teeth, and the smaller chainring in the front, 42. 42.5 gear inches according to Sheldon's calculator.
What a trip ------ but fish tacos? You are kidding right? Lp

Looks like a fun ride.
I think we should take up a collection to get TromboneAl a new helmet with a little more ventilation.

Great story and pics. Do you find the bike comfortable with the bars set so high? No back problems?

Looks like you had a great time, and the scenery is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing (and reminding us that we need to ride in that corner of the country).

This is my part of the country and I think the wife and I are going to have to do some riding in the San Juans next summer.
I spent a day riding a bike on Lopez Island in July of last year with a friend of mine fron Seattle. We did it two days after I got there from OZ,even though I had jet lag we had a great time.A very nice part of the world! Thanks for the photo's (foto's) it brought back a lot of fond memories.
