Hi, I was just wondering how i could remove the headset cups from the frame. i ahve a threadless one and i don't care if i mash this one up(no name kind). Any method would be appreciated. Bringing it to a LBS would be my last option since it is really inconvinent for me.

Thanks in Advance.

Park sells a tool that lets you bash them out with a hammer.

You will need a headset press to install the new parts in the. head tube. You'll also need a special tool to install the race on the fork crown.

Unless you plan on replacing a lot of headsets, it's cheaper by far to pay $25 for a shop to do it for you.

You could use a big flat screwdriver and hammer. Or a bit of pipe or wood. Pretty much anything that will fit into the headtube and rest up against the headset cup so you can knock it out.
This is what the proper tool looks likelink (http://www.bikemagic.com/review/reviewproduct/mps/RPN/5040/v/1/sp/328870336993364539288)

Fitting crown races is easy, you just need some pipe that is the correct diameter to hammer the race onto the crown. I use an old stem with the clamp spread and a hammer.

For pressing the cups all you need is a threaded rod, some nuts and washers.

If you do a search there are proberly quite a bit of info on diy headset tools.

exactly what i was thinking but might be a bit dangerous for the headtube. I think i might go along wiht hte screwdriver unless there are any other easier ways.

Skip the screwdriver and go with the pipe.

Go through the head tube with a flathead screw driver and tap it out with a hammer. Just take your time and do a little at a time.

If possible, find a piece of brass pipe. The brass is softer than the steel and will not harm the headset. I actually have been looking for a brass pipe for years to no avail. I use a piece of 1" PVC pipe. I use a piece about 1' long and insert it through the headtube, hold it against one side and keep working it slowly around till it pops out. Then I flip the frame over and do the other side.

The screwdriver works, but tends to damage the headset. I know you mentioned you're not concerned about it, but why not get what you need now so next time you'll be ready.

hmmm...1 inch PVC pipe...that sounds like a better idea. Doesn't the PVC pipe tend to flake when you tap at it a lot? When I tried installing a race crown wiht a PVC pipe the bottom flaked from the race crown digging into it. Should i glue like a spacer to it to prevent that from happeneing when i try to know out the cups?
