Greetings, Friends. A neighbor was throwing out a long-neglected Fuji Nevada a few weeks ago. He offered it to me, knowing that I'm a roadie and might be able to restore it.
My question is, how much time and money would it take to restore this thing?
Bear in mind, I have little experience working on bikes; took me a long time to figure out how to thoroughly adjust the front der. on my triple-ring road bike. I've never replaced cables or re-greased bearings (well, not in many, many decades), etc.
- Chainrings and rear cogs: Rust on the teeth, but teeth are not especially shark-finned, look pretty use-able
- Cables on brakes and der's need replacing. Parts of rear brake are missing (parts of the brake lever, as well as one pad)
- Tires are in great shape, wheels relatively true
- Not sure if it's the right size for me: I'm 5' 10" with a 29-30" inseam, and the frame size is 17". Feels small, but I don't know MTBs at all. My neighbor is shorter than me.
- don't know much about shocks, but front shock seems pretty functional
I know the Nevada is rated as a decent-value bike, and I would love to try trail and snow riding this winter, as have just moved to a more rural location.
Alternatively, would it be worth it to have the LBS do the work and replace the parts? Or should I just ditch the Nevada and go on Craigslist and find a cheapo used bike nearer my size? I don't even know if I'll like MTBing, been a roadie for so long. I currently don't have a garage or basement to a) work on, or b) store the bike -- don't even know how I'll store this, our third bike.
This is looking less and less worth it, huh?
