Foo - You know your a nerd when....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

when you see him say "soldering gun" when he's clearly holding a soldering iron, and you are upset by this.
You saw Revenge of the Nerds in the theater and thought it was a documentary.

you make a conscious effort to shorten and dumb down your explanations for things, because most people just don't care to know that much detail.

PCad is married and I am not. I am pretty sure if someone asks me what do I do and if I get back with,
"I am an Analog Circuit Designer" they would go "riiiiiight"
Instead I say "I work on stuff for cell phones" which is close enough. If they asked me anything more, I find it incredibly difficult to relate to anyone who is not an engineer.

At my current job, it's about a 60/40 man/woman ratio for the engineers. Early on in my career though I was the first woman engineer hired for 2 of my jobs. That was interesting.

Not if you wear one of those aluminum foil hats.
Some guys at MIT did a "Faraday Fez" experiment and actually found that the aluminum hats increased radiation to the head. (Okay, have I proved my nerd-worthiness yet?)

That is an impressive ratio! Our campus runs closer to 90:10 -> M:W. To be very honest that cartoon is spot on, some of the things that have been said to my one, particularly close, friend surprise and baffle me at the same time!
Edit Example : Some guy emailed a younger prettier female colleague that he liked how her clothes fit, using company email!!!

You just need to find the right kind of female engineer. I used to work in the cell phone arena (QCOM, Ericsson). We had much fun with the SAR test heads and the jello stuff that went inside.

****, I wish my campus was 90:10 for EE. Overall engineering it's probably somewhere around 75/25 because there's a lot of women in Chemical Engineering. But in Electrical/computer engineering (we're one college here), it's about 97/3. I'm not kidding.

Can you recommend a good tape measure that has excellent extension capabilities while still being small, lightweight, and easy to haul around on a belt?

When you know more Star Trek trivia than your calc teacher. The one with the Cpt. James T Kirk life sized carboard cutout in the corner along with a TNG poster on the door along with a home built, 1/1000th size model of Voyager.

I'm a Computer Engineering student, with a minor in Mathematics, that rides bikes and has four laptops and two desktops in his room (one of them with Linux installed). I also danced a bit to that Star Wars Disco song, and I listen to Nerf Herder.
I think I've justified my geek pride.

At the Stevens Institute of Technology (my school), while we are slowly getting a healthy stream of women into our campus, if we isolate the population and concentrate on the engineering students, it is still evident that there will be plenty of men who will leave single and lonely every single year.
The likelihood of leaving disappointed at my school can be ranked rather nicely:
MOST LIKELY
- Naval Engineering (there is only ONE woman I know in this major...and she's not the most desirable)
- Computer Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering (i.e. the female's engineering degree)
LEAST LIKELY
Fortunately for me (and my strong preference for the Asian woman), I attend NYU part-time. Somehow, I'm still single (though not lonely anymore :D).

My boss told me to start doing that. I refuse to lower myself down to that level.
