Advocacy & Safety - too dangerous

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You need to read John Forester's "Effective Cycling"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0262560704/103-8842889-2835026?v=glance
What specific questions do you have?
Bicycling typically is as safer or safer than most activities/sports/modes of transportation, and Forester gives techniques for riding safely in traffic, etc.
Courses in Effective Cycling may be available in your area. Sometimes Parks departments or biking clubs offer them.

Go to www.fremontfreewheelers.org. There are links on the homepage to a couple of sites pertaining to riding safely. John Forester's site is an excellent one.
If you want basic info but do need to buy their books. http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/
Also try your public library.

Be visible, be defensive, wear a helmet/gloves, yield when in question, and maintain your equipment.

Don't crash.
Want something more specific, ask a more specific question.

What part of the world do you live in?
I'll be teaching a basic/commuter cycling class in April. If you live near Atlanta you can sign up. Just contact the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign (http://www.atlantabike.org/) for more info.
If you don't live near Atlanta talk to someone at your LBS or contact some of your local cycling clubs or advocacy groups. Perhaps a similar class for new cyclists is taught in your area.
If you don't have any luck get the book that Dnvr recommended above.
Yes, bicycling is dangerous. So is motoring; so is inactivity. There are no guarantees anywhere in life, but there are plenty of intelligent ways to bias the odds in your favor.
For reading, any of the "Three Gospels of John" (John S. Allen's "Street Smarts," John Forester's "Effective cycling," John Franklin's "Cyclecraft") is recommended reading.
buy a bunch of flashy bright lights and put them on the bike! seriously. :D (i just like how silly it sounds) :D
