I know this subject has been somewhat beaten to death but I just wanted to get a blessing of sorts. I'm looking to build a semi (this snowballs real fast) low cost wheel set. The frame is a Bianchi Volpe (130mm dropout). Planning on doing light touring 25 to 30 Lbs of gear. I weigh 145 soaking wet. Here's what I've got so far.

Shimano Deore LX M580
Front $25.95
Rear $41.95

DT Competition DB 2.0 1.8 SS Spokes
Front and Rear $44.84

Rim Tape
2 Rolls $2.95

The above prices are are from cambriabike.com and shipping is $11.00.

I'm planning on using Sun-Ringle CR 18s from universalcycles (thanks Lamplight)
Front and Rear $58.00, shipping is $12.00

Grand total including shipping is $199.64. peterwhite wants about 215.00 w/o shipping for the same wheel set (i don't need the lifetime warranty. Id have to send them back anyway to get them fixed.)

Here's the drivetrain problem I have Suntour Mountech front and rear Ds that i was going to use for this build with a Sakae CR Triple. That is set up as a six speed. The hubs I'm getting are nine speed completable. Can I run this setup with no interference or will the nine speed interfere with the triple up front? Would the RD work with a nine speed chain. If it wont work can I run with that RD? The hubs pictured uses Hyperglide cassette I think. Planning on using friction shifters.

the other option is just buy a front hub, rims, spokes, tape and use the old 126mm Suntour hub w/ the freewheel and call it a day. I like things to match but I think this is snowballing like I said. Let me know what yall think.

There is also a pair of older XT Deores for $40.00 but they use Uniglide. The Only available cassettes for that I know of are at loosescrews.com for around $30.00. Some are on eBay as well.

AAAAHHHHH CONFUSION!!

Thanks in advance.

Christian

Ah, I'd be very careful here. If you just messing around with bikes making a crazy franken-bike, go for it. (I love doing this) If you are trying to fix up a bike on a budget, spending $200 plus on an old bike may not be your best bet. Afterall, you buy a complete touring bike for under $1000. It's easy to pump $500 plus on an older bike and still have an old funky bike.

I'd get a machine built wheelset with 130mm hubs (Sora would be fine) and an 8 speed chain and cassette. It will match well with your current drivetrain parts without breaking the budget.

A few issues:
1. the LX hub is 135 spaced in the rear, you can fit it but it will be wide
2. Get Peter White cycles to build it. Building wheels takes time to do it properly
3. You can run an 8 speed Hyperglide cassette on the hubs, but you shouldn't run 9 speed. The chain width difference will start to cause issues with your older triple.

1. Is only an issue if you don't plan on respacing the LX to 130, which I believe you can do.
