I am going to test-ride a friend's Kona Unit 1x9 tomorrow. Its partly to satiate my need to try trail-riding again but I am also looking for an alternative to my day-to-day touring bike/commuter...for winter?

Any ideas how a 29r handle icy snow ruts on the side of the roads? Better or worse than 26" wheeled mtbikes?

Everything else being equal the larger wheel should handle ruts a bit better.

Tire choice will generally play a more important role.
