Infodump:

Due to a laceration and scar across the ball of my left foot, I've developed an awkward gate that I don't think I've made much progress in correcting. Last year I was running a fair bit for me (5 miles 2-3x a week) when I developed foot pain. Doc diagnosed sesamoiditis and did scrapings for a couple torturous weeks. They told me that unless I want to go through specific (read: expensive) physical therapy to analyze and correct my gait, then I should lay off the running. One year later I feel like my feet feel fine and take up running again since my work schedule has kind of kept me off the bike. After a couple weeks the results are about what you'd expect. My feet feel like hammered ****.

I like running and don't want to give it up, but I kinda have to at this point. I am beginning to consider going to physical therapy to figure out if I can continue running, but that's a lot of money and time to invest in something that may ultimately prove that I just shouldn't be running.

So I guess my question is if anyone here has had a similar experience with foot pain? Did you ever find a solution?

My knees are fine as long as I pay attention to what I'm doing and don't try to take on too much, too fast. The only thing holding me back are my damn feet.

Before I started cycling I used to run, I ran more and more then started training for a marathon. The ball of my foot started to hurt, I've had issues in my feet ever since I was a kid, so I went to the foot doctor. He said I do not have the biomechanics to be a distance runner and I should stop running long distances. I said I am going to run a marathon, you can either help me or not. He said my advice to you is to stop running long distances. So I went to the local running store, hte owner told me to ice my feet after each run. So I would come home, shower and stick my feet in a bucket of ice and water for 10-15 minutes. As long as I did this I was pain free.

So my advice to you would be to ice your foot and see if that helps.

Be very careful. I ran trails for years and finally had to give it up due to my knees, but by then my feet were pretty hammered, now 5-10 years after tapering off I have almost constant ball of foot pain if I hike more than a few easy miles, bike more than 30-40 or am on my feet all day. It is very difficult to correct and multiple podiatrists have been unable to do much for it. I have othotics and spend a fortune on quality shoes. Keeping my calves stretched out helps, foot exercises help, ice helps, and dropping 15 lbs would also make life easier for them... The feet are incredibly complex, and in my case I accrued some scar tissue/nerve damage over time that made it worse..

The more I read on the subject the worse it looks.

Well your post got me thinking about running again, and since my race season is over and I am taking a break from the bike, I ran yesterday for the first time in almost 2 years. Boy how I miss it. I think mtroads case is very rare, I ran thousands of miles and several marathons and I have no issues from the running.

I'll add some more bad news. I broke my sesamoid, and kept running. My gait was wacked, and it ended up ruining my left knee. Now I have arthritis in my knee, and can't run at all. I also had to give up backpacking, can't carry a heavy pack anymore. Cycling is ok, sort of.

Don't mess around with it - see a sports med doc, get orthotics, do your PT...

I also broke my sesamoid bone - don't know how you kept running on it mine hurt like !@#%^&!

I just finished up 6 weeks in a walking cast and the foot feels much better - I can bend my toe. I do feel like apea under the ball of my foot, Dr., says it's scar tissue.

Went for my first ride yesterday, I just spun real easy and had no pain.
