Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Rim with black machined sidewalls (doubt it)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I love that bike. Anyway, you'll notice that they're running a front brake on a wheel with black sidewalls, which is supposedly an IRO wheel. Those rims probably aren't machined for a brake, and I personally wouldn't want to run a brake on a non-machined sidewall, not only because of possibly reduced braking performance but also because the paint/anodizing/powdercoat/etc. will wear off with enough use and look terrible.
So, do any rims exist with black and machined sidewalls? I doubt it. Figured I'd ask anyway. (I want black mavic open pros with black sidewalls, somehow)
Wheels kinda look like crap if they're black and have silver machined sidewalls, as you can see on this Mercier Kilo TT Pro on Bikesdirect: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/kilott_pro.htm
I'd get over it if I have to.

I agree about the Kilo TT Pro's wheelset -- that silver strip takes away from the appearance :(
1/2 the battle is getting the rear non-machined when you just run a front brake.

get silver rims and get them anodized black. but i've heard about anodizing coming off sidewalls if the bike has brakes and is ridden in rain.

mavic ellipse?
lol what? i believe the OP wants to find a rim that has a black machined sidewall so that the color won't be messed up when braking on that black rim. i don't think i've ever seen that .
maybe if you got carbon wheels like Zipps? that would be mad expensive though.
As JayNev suggested, i might just go for a non-machined on the back, and machined on the front - saw it today, it looked fine ..
Your input is appreciated

Are you thinking of Mavic Open Pros?
Are you thinking of Mavic Open Pros?
Yes, I think I mentioned them in my original post? They don't have black sidewalls, do they? I know they have the Mavic Open Pro CD's, which are basically case-hardened on the braking surface, so they are darker .. but I would think that even that would wear off with time? From http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-30557.html
They're such nice wheels though

Open Pro CD's will wear after braking. I have quite a few wheelsets built with OP CD's and it never gets shiny, just a low lustre lighter gray. At first of course it will wear in the typical uniform "spots" (spoke locations) but eventually will go with an even color. The CD's wear without the more noticeable shiny wear that is typical with a non hard anodize (black/blue etc.)
But if you are running a single brake, then the difference will be more noticeable of course, but not too bad. I personally don't mind, but from a style standpoint it might detract if you really want to run sparkly all the time.

lol wut mavic ellipse have a black anodized machined braking surface.
of course the anodization will rub off pretty quickly.
just throwing out suggestions.

worth a shot, refillable too incase you have to do a lot of rims
stachemaster.. thank you. haha
erzulis boat - thanks for the input. i think i'm going to go with the CD's after all, and i won't mind the worn look, and i mean please, i really shouldn't give that much of a ****. at least people will know that i ride my bike! i wanted the open pro's because they're great rims, and they're going to look just fine.

If I ride the Pinarello to work tomorrow, I can post some pics of wear after like 8 years of hard riding, they still have not gone shiny, just a nice gray.
Just yesterday I was at the LBS and saw the Giant Bowery {white one** with___ a black deep v rim with a black machined sidewall. I said to the guy, who makes this? he said it was made by Giant in house. It didn't seem quite as solid as a Velocity but they could sell a zillion of them as aftermarket.
I did buy a set of deep v's both machined and sold the rear, then bought a non machined fixed/ fixed.
you can see it in this thread

Erzulis, if you do ride the pinarello and you have it in you to take the pictures, please do - and thanks in advance
sharpie! woooooh. i saw someone did that to the braking surface of their hed3 before. i'll prob try it, or a paint marker? why not
seriously whats wrong with a machined sidewall if you are running a brake? form over function... even on deep vees...

This represents a lot of miles through hills, and I bought the bike after Jan won the tour, so this is about as shiny as the sidewalls are going to get. I think it still looks good.
Sorry about the dirty bike.....but you get the idea.
ETA- Jan won in 1997, yikes!
Erzulis, thanks for the picture. Nice bike, btw!
I'm going to build a set of wheels with the Open Pros CD's, and I've decided that I really don't care if the rims get worn - as long as they stay straight! I can't wait to build them up. Thanks to all
