Yesterday, with the temperature all the way up to 42F, I decided to pedal down to the grocery store to pick up the items we needed. Just as I got to the store I hear the dreaded ffffsssss... of a flat and find a staple in my tire. I open the saddle bag and pull out the tools, but my tire levers are missing. I tried using the screwdriver from the multi-purpose tool to pry the tire off but it won't work. Fortunantly, just last week I read a hint in "Bicycling" magazine that the quick release levers can be used as an emergency tire lever. With nothing to lose, I gave it a try and they worked like a charm. Popped a few inches of tire off the rim, pulled out the tube, slapped on a patch, pulled the tire back on the rim and I was on my way.
When I got home I found my regular tire levers. On the workbench where my son had been working on his bike. Thanks kid!
This was also the first time I used a glueless patch, and it worked well too. 24 hours later the wheel is still at full pressure.
I hate flats, but ended up feeling pretty good about how this one worked out.
