Foo - Damn I think I'm sick, or am I?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. So my symptoms are: like a 5% runny nose, extremely sore throat, and coughing-usually resulting in coughing minor phlegm up or having to swallow and feeling something come down with the saliva. Ok, so, I went to my school's medical center and saw some nurse woman, who obviously didn't know much. According to her my throat is fine (even though it hurts like a *****), and that my lungs sound fine. I asked her whether this could be a viral or bacterial case, and she didn't know. So now that I think of it, I believe this problem is from post-nasal drip. This would explain me having no need for a tissue and the extra gunk that I'm swallowing. Hm, could this be a possibility? Actually, if this were the case (and the phlegm was clear by the way, same with whatever comes out of my nose), I'm not technically sick with a infection..it could be say seasonal allergies, but instead of having a normal runny nose, I get the nasal drip, leaking into my lungs and irritating my throat possibly. Whatever this is I need it gone pronto. 3 tests in the next week and I feel like crap. Last night I left my room to sleep in the study lounge, because I was coughing all night and didn't want to wake up my roommate. I was given a few things from the doctor (some decongestant and 'diphenhydramine') which is like a benadryl. Hehe, I can't wait to take two tonight and go to sleep fast. :thumb:

I think I have the same thing except I had a sore throat before it all then the other good stuff came way. My throat stopped hurting around a day after and now I'm enjoying a good nasal drip.
I'm sorry Eric, but you have AIDS.

Rule of thumb... If the stuff you're hacking up is green, bacterial infection, get to a doc for antibiotics. If it's yellowish, viral and you'll have to let it run its course.
Good luck!

Zicam! Lots of fluids! Airborne! Emergen-cee!
Also, try to get lots of rest, and get a second opinion, if possible.
Wow, so after two Benadryls last night (I slept in our hall's floor lounge this time) my nose was running like a beast during the night hours. Amen to that. Though the mucus looked a tad yellow :(

A couple years ago, I had a pretty bad head cold, which turned into a sinus infection. (snot was bright orange.) I had been taking diphenhydramine (benadryl) at night, which I think made it worse. It dried up my sinuses so they couldn't drain at night, giving the bacteria (or whatever it was) a place to hide and reproduce. In the mornings, I would hack up all kinds of nasty mucus for a couple hours. This lasted for a few weeks. Then I decided to stop taking the benadryl at night, and my sinuses cleared up within about two days. Lesson that I learned: don't take benadryl at night when I have a cold.
