The artical the Aussie Gym coach put out was a great read yes, but its nothing special. Alot of it also pertains to athletes who are very acomplished weight lifters. Not newbies. Theres also alot of small details left out that they wish to keep secret, along with the fact it was writen in 2005.

In all honesty there is nothing in the gym that sprinters do that is specific to cycling. Its all plain old lower body and core strenth / power. The best thing you can do is go to a gym with somone who knows what they're doing or hire a trainer for a bit to help you. If your just getting into it you really need to learn proper technique before you add on the poundage. And just like any form of training you have to develop a base before you start to go up in weight.

I would have to disagree with the last post. I had a very specific weights programme when I was track sprinting tailored to my strengths and weaknesses, and many of the exercises were the type that are not normally taught by gym trainers. You can contact me direct if you want details but my coach would kill me if I posted them on a public forum :-)

Hey, don't forget to actually keep your endurance too.

I just spent months building up muscle, I now weigh a lean 96 kilos. Due to work commitments I was off the bike for about 8 weeks. I got back on the bike a few days ago thinking 'I'll still be fast due to the extra muscle'... Nope, I'm slower, painfully slower and it felt like my lungs were being stung by 8000 bees. The extra muscle alone did f_ck all.

Build muscle by all means, but don't forget the endurance.

now, I'm going to get the endurance back... I've left it a bit late, track season starts here in Australia any day now...

That's why you spend lots of time on the trainer/rollers.

(Almost) Every morning it's a half an hour after a 10 minute warm up for me. It's dull as ****, but you gotta do it.

Word. Strength alone doesn't make you fast...

It's all about the engine... and the fuel!
