Advocacy & Safety - LAB 'Outing' Politicians and Journalists Who 'Trash Talk' Bicycling

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Who's Trash Talking Bikes?

Every now and then, someone takes a potshot at bicyclists and bicycling. Sometimes it’s a politician; other times a shock jock. Whoever it is, and whatever their motivation, we don’t like it! So we keep track of who says what, and give you the chance to talk back. For responses to common trash talk, click on the menu to the right (Driving Costs, Pay Your Way, etc.)

Sep. 8, 2008: Senator Jim DeMint, South Carolina
July 29, 2008: U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters
July 18, 2008: David Brooks, New York Times
Dec. 6, 2007: Representative John Boehner, Ohio
Aug. 4, 2007: Representative Patrick McHenry, North Carolina

It might be easier for them to list those that don't trash talk bicycling.... much shorter list

The Australian version, with all the hatred and violence there is out there against cyclists, sent bike and policy questionaires to politicians and councillors. They then rated them on a scale so they knew who to focus on for policy help (the pro bike/ped responders) and who to campaign against at election time (the anti bike responders).

There's an old thread in A&S about it I think.

Nice list - they missed a LOT of them.

Is there a frequently updated list?

They should send everyone on the list a bike for Christmas.

Those were stupid. Most of them were just "hey, let's quit spending money on rec trails and spend it on something else. That's a fair suggestion. It shows a deficiency in math, but it's still a fair comment.

McHenry's comments, on the other hand, show why no one should vote for him again. He ignored 99% of a bill and commented on the most minor point in it to tear down an entire political party. What a piece of partisan garbage.
