First of all, my apologies for posting this thread here, but am not sure where it ought to go :D

Does anyone have experience on cargo bikes? Where to look, how to outfit etc?
I mean HEAVY duty big-ass load carrying cargo bikes for messenger work :)

Your help much appreciated!

You might want to check out the Xtracycle (http://www.xtracycle.com/html/home.php)

Jeez, that Bejing Bike needs some horizontal dropouts and a few links removed!! Do a Google search for work bikes.

Worksman Cycles (http://www.worksmancycles.com/)

Mostly European... but fun to look at... (http://www.workbike.org/)

and one of my favorite publications (with lots of cycling alternatives) (http://www.encycleopedia.com/)

The Xtracycle is sort of like that in reverse (cargo area in rear) and you add it to an existing bike. If you've already got a bike as a candidate, it would be pretty cheap. The latest hard copy of CRC (http://www.carsrcoffins.com) has a review.

A not so extreme alternative to the Bilenky.... and probably a bit easier to come by, the Worksman Low Gravity Bike (and it can be ordered as a SS) (see attachment)

read a review of a "Burrows Engineering 8Freight" in cycling+, it's expensive but is well designed, the low centre of gravity is a big bonus. Putting the load over the front wheel as above is going to screw your braking up as the rear wheel is going to lose traction easily. It also uses monostays so you can replace tubes without taking the wheel off. It can handle 100kg of load plus 75kg rider. Supposed to be much preferable to using a trailer.

A link to a photo of it (not as good as the one in the mag):
