I love to fish, just to get out and away. Inside the plantations,we have rivers, and given our size, rarely are they fished. We probably have about 4 kilometers of rivers that are private for all intents and purposes. These are all wild jungle rivers - with fish. Tropical fish...

And they are skitish to say the least. But, I am starting to fish more often, and I am learning how to catch them. My fishing buddy is a Nicaraguan campesino about 54 years old who insists on carrying all my gear and making sure the gringo doesn't fall in the river.

He gets all the small fish I don't want to bother cleaning and the sabalo which, though fight really well, are too bony for me. But, I get the big guapotes... if I catch them of course.

Yesterday, I got a very nice one, probably 3 lbs. beautiful fish. hit hard, fought hard. tasted wonderful. A lot like marlin. Not fishy at all, even baked and the meat was very, very firm, even chewy.

This message of course was to torture Jsharr. :innocent:

Have you tried brackish water fishing? Dragging a net in the brackish shallow on the rainforest edge is an awesome experience.

Haven't yet, we live about 3 hours from a coast. I love fishing rivers more than anything. So peaceful, so nice.

Where we live, we have Rio Cote, which is about 30 to 50 feet across and ten feet deep in some pools. Very nice fishing. At certain times of the year, tarpon come up it to spawn. I had a 3 foot long tarpon swim next to me once in the river... :twitchy:

You could fish with a shopping basket if you were in Texas now.

Someday, when you least expect it, I will show up on your doorstep, at Casa de CRTD and demand to go fishing. If you do not take me, I will loose the hounds of hell upon you (read this to mean my sons will run around your house making a mess.)

Anytime you want, I'll take you fishing. It will be my pleasure. And the hounds of hell can entertain my hound, that should wear them all out...

The fishing is getting really good lately in the fincas. I am learning what to do, how to do it, and of course, pretty much no one fishes in the fincas except me - which means there is a lot of fish!

Life is good.

Nope, not this time. Should have, beautiful fish.

Here is a decent photo of a Guapote. Mine was a little smaller, but not much.

Hook a guapote (yes, peacock bass) to a Large mouth and it will drag it to death. Man they fight! They have teeth too, though not many, but enough to convince you don't want to lip land it...

The lake guapote (which this was, though caught in a river) gets bigger than the river guapote (here called a Pinto) and loves caves. A definite meat eater too.

In my opinion, guapote (not a true bass) taste much better than a largemouth or smallmouth bass. Very light flavor. It was very good baked, with curry.
