Do some searches here and you'll find most of your questions already answered. I will tell you, that you'll find that the most important advice is to test ride each and buy the one that has the most comfortable ride. Each manufacturer uses different geometries and tube lengths. What works for my individual body geometry may not work for you.

Do some research on Gary the Fisher- I like frames designed\ built by master fabricators.
Old Tom built mine.
Bigger the production line, less attention to detail.
I worked on a friends Trek today, older- the frame had burrs that had been factory painted over, sloppy work.
Go Fisher..even if it's a few bucks more.
Robots weld, they don't ride.

I second the vote for the Hoo Koo E Koo. I ride a 2002 HKEK and absolutely love it. My plan was to buy that bike for the frame and upgrade the parts as time went on. It is a very stiff frame, not the lightest but still a good weight for its price. The geometry is something else I really like, especially compared to the Kona I rode before my GF. Hope this helps.

I'd have to agree also. I own an older Hoo Koo E Koo and I absolutely love it for a hard tail. I've never had any serious problems with it... all around its a great bike.

It all depends, man. Test rides, test rides. I would say, just on a hunch, that if you are taller, go for the Fisher. The trek has nice components, except for the RockSh*t fork. The Rainer is similar to the Trek, but the Judy fork....ugh. If you are looking in the 800 or less range, there are a lot of great bikes that aren't the "mainstream" models. Just look around.

Trekkie's right...ride em' all and see what ya get...as far as in the saddle feeling. Fisher seems to be coming with some nice parts lately, but don't discount the Trek just cause of other's feelings for the parts...some things may suit you better than they did them.
You can also find some killer "other brands" too. KHS, Titus, Jamis all come to mind. You may also check on e-bay...I've seen some killer deals on older Schwinn Paramounts and Homegrowns lately. Don't down em' just cause they're used. The group I ride with has an older Paramount that gets passed around when we break our FS bikes and believe, it gets a beating!!!
