I just purchased some XT V brakes as an upgrade. The sticker on the brakes says use only levers with servo wave yadda yadda. So here is my question. I have linear pull brake levers, but no where on the package does it say servo wave or anything like it. They are low end levers that you can adjust internally to work with cantilevers or V brakes (I am using them with a disk brake and hopefully my new V-brake). Will they work with the XT brakes I just purchased?

I am also going to contact the shop where I bought the brakes, but I thought I would post the question here in the meantime.

My older bike has XT v brakes with some low end no-name levers. The brakes will work with any linear pull brake lever.

Thanks. That is what I suspected, but I wanted to get some input. Here is the info from Shimano's website:


Use the BR-M760 V-BRAKE brake with SERVO WAVE
ACTION and adjustable V-BRAKE brake-compatible levers
such as the ST-M760/ST-M960 brake levers.

NOTE:

By using these parts as a set, the optimum efficiency of the Multi-
Condition Brake System can be realized.

Parts are not guaranteed against natural wear or deterioration
resulting from normal use.

For maximum performance we highly recommend Shimano
lubricants and maintenance products.

For any questions regarding methods of handling or maintenance,
please contact the place of purchase.

Their references to efficiency seemed a bit vague. They also had a warning about getting thrown over the bars because of severe braking if the wrong levers were used. That image was pretty comical (having made that trip once or twice myself).

they say that just for the sake of trying to get you to buy there matching brake levers. I use to run xtr vbrakes on my f500 with cheapo tektro brakes levers and never had a problem. Those vbrakes are now on my giant and I am using shimano tourney brake/shifter combo with them and still have no problem.
