Shooting for a perfect score? I'd say do it only if it is a carbon monocoque kickstand or produced by Nagasawa for their track bikes.

i dunno. I prefer the power lean, leaning it on something, but i guess a kickstand would be practical. I had one on my MTB(don't ask)for about 1 mile of a trail, then left it for dead.

Totally lame. But that is not to say that I don't have one on my bike!! It is a used 80's schwinn frame and I cannot find an allen key that fits the damn hole. It does come in handy though.

Way too practical to be lame. However, if I find a bike w/o one, I generally don't bother to install one.

Actually, I'd like to find one that will support significant weight for my workbike.

on vintage cruisers? VERY cool.
on fixed gears? less cool.

to each his own is what i say. if you want to put it on, put it on, and when people start talking **** and sneering, just use it and be like "CAN YOUR BIKE DO THAT!?!!?! WELL.....CAN IT!?!? I DIDN'T THINK SO, CHUMP!!!!"

On a town bike - Cool
On a cruiser - Cool
On anything else - lame
Any of the above bikes can be any configuration, geared, SS, fixed, road, mountian whatever. Kickstands are an application thing. Kinda like pedestrian warning bells.

I had a bunch of 12 year olds kick the living shhite (extra "h" for emphasis) for having a kickstand...just yesterday. Once the tears dried and my lips stopped swelling, I could see that life is cruel and that having a kickstand means you get what you deserve. As I was riding home, I saw a smallish, stray yip-dog. I slowed down and went over to vent my frustration by kicking it. It bit me square in the n*ts. Then those kids heard me screaming and beat the shhite out of me again, this time with an old bedpan. Those sure sound funny when they hit your head...I lost count after 7.
When I awoke the next day, my bike was still upright on the sidewalk, thanks to my kickstand!

Does it really matter what we say about what's cool or not?

'Cause I'm gonna say you're an attention *****, and thus, not cool.

But, I'm about as far from cool as can be so it may be cool to be called un cool and an attention ***** by me.

I don't know. The more I think about it, the more confused I get, about the cool thing.

But, it's better to be hated for what you are, than loved for what you're not.

And BTW, fixed gears aren't cool; they destroy your knees, and according to a cycling magazine I read last night at the airport instead of buying it, fixed gears are only for urban hipsters.

I guess that means guys who live down town with really wide hips. Which I'm not, but really, don't know, and when I think about it, I get really confused.

But, IRT the kickstand, go back to the nipple, and then when you're done, decide for your self.

The cool thing is how too many guys buy the bike, dress and so on. I know i'm not because i wear mtb jerseys instead of road jerseys and thats not cool on a road bike.Bet i dont care.

absolutely nothing

gender as a binary, polar opposite is a social construct. and therefore not inate within humanity. [and once you take on that, so is hetereosexuality as a norm]

DESTROY GENDER BOUNDARIES!

But since social constructs are something that has been created by humanity, wouldn't it follow that it is utterly human. How can we seperate ourselves from who we are and what we create? We are responsible for pissing in our own bathwater.

edit: To answer the original question...kickstands are cool. Just keep it under your kilt like me.

Kickstands just got metaphysical, hmm...

I think I'll go ride instead of worrying about it.

because then you add in things like class politics, race politics, sexual politics.

and their associated oppressions by various groups who hold power and who's interest it is to stay in power. to stay in power they will oppress those below them through any means posisble.

you get things like orientalism- identifying others by how different they are to you [eg: look at those savages etc.], essentialism- the idea that people are born not made [eg. when human nature is invoked in arguements], etc.

social constructs aren't specifically wrong if they aren't held up as the one and one right way of existing within a society.

***********
on kickstands: f your bike's in your house, why not just hang/lean it on the wall? and if it's in the street, why isn't it locked to something [and presumably leaning on the thing it's locked to]?

If a bike falls over in a deserted forest...does it make a sound?

p3ntuprage
03-02-04, 02:03 PM
it doesn't fall over, because the person who left it there leant it up against a tree.

cyclist tarot deck has the kickstand attributed to the card 'Hanged Man'
If you notice the bike on the ground was used as a ladder to get the hight needed to get the noose around his neck then 'kick the stand' out from under himself.
This cards meaning:
Solitude to gain perspective, stand back and rethink actions, sacrifice.
? time to let the past go my friend, free your stand, free yourself.

If a bike falls over in the desert, does it make a sound?

Yes, only when someone steps on the spokes. Which happened at Burning Man a few years ago to my friend's kickstand-less bike. FU'd the wheel.

Commuter, Utility, Around towners -- yay to kickstands, optional

Racers, Off-road MTB'ers -- nay to kickstands, no way

I don't think they're lame. Maybe not "cool" but not lame. I'm gonna.

As far as a kickstand being practical, when is the last time you were inclined to stand your bike up in the middle of the sidewalk or where ever? I usually lean it against whatever I am locking up to..
