So, my first commute in after all the rain. I knew there would be some wet spots but ... WTF?

I get to the first lake and go to lowest gear and power through the soggy field on my commuter bike. Sloshy and wet but no real problems (just don't have to put a foot down). I thought that would be the biggest lake ... I was wrong. There was no way around this lake without turning around and going another 12 miles out of the way (or riding on Barrington Road ... forget it). So I decide to try to ride the edge in the grass again. It keeps getting deeper and I've got over 200 feet yet to cross. Oh boy, now my shoes are hitting the water, still a long way.

Well, now I'm up to my knees ... yes knees! in the water. I have my panniers on my bike and there are nearly underwater. I thought I was going to clear the top of the front wheel (the axles were submerged long ago). And the stagnant water is real nice too, no dead worms, duck feces or anything ... yech! I power through as I really have no other choice.

The panniers stayed pretty dry surprisingly. No electronic gear was damaged on the inside. So, motor on. This was the last of the ponds, by far the smallest.

So now I'm sitting in my office after washing off my shoes and rinsing off my socks, wearing bike socks, fan blowing on my shoes stuffed with newspaper ... and hoping they dry out for the ride home. I'll be taking the long way. ;)

If you ride the FRT, I'd wait. After all the flooding last August I tried riding back from the office one day. I thought I'd given it enough time... I ended up wading in waist-deep water for about 200 yards. Nasty.

Wow! What kind of panniers do you have that can weather that kind of ride?

It's all along the FRT. I have work arounds for the areas that usually flood, but it does mean a lot of cyclocross up hills and down railroad tracks, etc...not my preference....

...then again I DO need to train for cross season...

Arkel. They have rubberized zips and everything but if I would have been in it longer, I think I would have had a problem. My wallet got a little damp at the bottom but not much of a problem at all. They are technically water resistant as if they were truly waterproof they would not breath and wouldn't dry out so you have a limited time in heavy rain, usually about 30 minutes. They have an extra rain cover that buys you more time.

I'm pretty lucky here near Cleveland, my bike path is just an obstacle course of tree branches and fallen trees.

As I was reading your words this popped into my head and I chuckled http://www.yehudamoon.com/index.php?date=2008-09-01

Too funny! I'm thankful I've never HAD to ride through anything like that, but I have to admit that it does sound like fun.

Metro Cincinnati trails have been the same after Ike blew through. With all the focus on getting power back to people and clear roads, the trek down the trails and some roads have been to duck under, crawl over, or walk around trees and debris.... even so, it's manageable.... thank goodness for the new Armadillos.

I was thinking of getting a varsity a while back, is it good for a tall guy, heavy too, 280lbs.? Maybe make a tourer out of it.
