Road Cycling - A question of aesthetics...generally meaningless p**P

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay, knowing that, in life's rich pageant, this is utterly meaningless poop, given a choice of black or silver for a seatpost, which do you prefer? Was considering all the fancy schmancy ones out there, including Ti and Carbon, but will most likely default to the Thomson setback.

There was a school of thought recently that said, purely out of aesthetics, match the color of the seatpost, stem and cranks. Probably poppycock, but then it was a Rodale publication. Not always easy, either, given that 95% of stems seem to be black, and unless it's carbon, painted, or anodized, most cranks are silver.

I know my black seatpost on my MTB is starting to look pretty rough, especially the area in the post that's been slathered in Phil Wood grease. Okay, so you rarely see that part, unless you pull it or for some reason extend it...

OTOH, the silver post on my singlespeed doesn't have the discoloration, but shows some galling and scoring lines.

Anyone have a preference on this altogether useless query?

Okay, fair enough...but do you prefer black or silver seatposts?

Depends on the bike.

Aesthetics is very important. When some of you purchased your last new vehicle, color and style, among other things, played a big factor I'll bet. No difference with bicycles. I make sure no component on my bike looks funky.......at least in my own eyes.

I would say black. Silver reminds me of a Huffy when I was a kid.

Generally, black. But on my BMX, it's white (dark red frame, white bars and forks, black everything else). Silver has it's place, but black is better.

Silver for the more classic road bikes, made of steel imho, lugged steel especially.

Pull out a can of spray paint... match it to the bike or go for a bright white. :)

Depends on the bike, with an all black frame, black seatpost looks stealthy....

black carbon. you'll get some nice subtle highlights with the carbon weave.

i have a beautiful silver Thomson Masterpiece on my black LeMond Zurich. Doesn't match my black Cilelli stem but looks great none the less. I'd go for black on a brushed ti frame though. Very pleased with the Thomson BTW.
