In decent weather I take a long loop to work three out of four days.
I start in the wrong direction entirely, head downtown, taunt the office workers at the hot dog stands, then head up the Riverway to the Erie Canalway, then out to the suburbs before turning back towards the city. I can add an easy 20 miles to my commute this way.
The Erie Canalway is also part of Adventure Cycling's (http://www.adventurecycling.org/) Northern Tier Route (http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/northerntier.cfm), from Washington state to Maine. We're in segment 10, Orchard Park, NY to Ticonderoga, NY (421.5 mi).
A couple of times a month I come across someone riding the route. I always stop if they're stopped, or ride a while with them if they're riding. Today I rode a while with a guy from Colorado Springs who started in Washington six or seven weeks ago. I always ask what part of the trip has been their favorite so far.
The guy today replied, "Lemme think a minute." A few moments later, "I'd have to say right here, right now," he started. "The last few days have been cold, windy and rainy, and here's a nice sunny, 70° day, light tailwind, pretty views, nice flat pavement and no traffic. Yeah, I'd have to say you got it pretty good for a commuting route."
Wow! I'll never look at my commute the same way again.
