I am always looking for good recommendations. I personally like to be emotionally and intellectually challenged. Her are some of my favorites:
The Station Agent
Best in Show
Fight Club
Ghost World
Before Sunrise
The Sweet Hereafter
Next Stop Wonderland
Lost in Translation
Big Night
How to Kill your Neighbors Dog
Memento
Requiem for a Dream - not sure if it's an indie
Box of Moonlight
Life as a House
Tell me your favorites. I am really interested in non-mainstream flix.
Not sure if any of these were "indies" but they were not the most popular movies and I've found that many people overlooked these classics.
Red Rock West
Blood Simple
Home Grown
House of Games
Things to do in Denver When You're Dead
Prophecy
Swimming to Cambodia or Gray's Anatomy
American Movie
Made
The Weight of Water
Life as a House ..really good
Fight Club..enough said..
Requiem, found it to be a difficult viewing at best.
Memento, an original story done well.
Ghost World, one of those "one copy" videos you take a chance on - enjoyable
I'll check out some of the ones you listed.
Check out "Maze." It was released a couple years ago.

The Tenant- Roman Polanski.
Blood Simple-Ya!
Tetsuo- Man of Iron.
Alice-The brothers Quay.
That's funny most of the titles are not indies. They are studio pix or foreign studio pix.
I think Memento is probably the most influential piece of moviemaking in the last 10 years. It has re-invented the art of editing and narrative. Everyone is copying it and influenced by it.
If you are looking for great indie flicks, all of Jim Jarmusch's films are GREAT. Rent them all, destroy a few bags of chips & Coke and be blown away.
The Music of Chance (James Spader, Mandy Patinkin; alas, not yet available on dvd)
All the Real Girls
Man of the Century
Dogfight
Three Seasons
Lawn Dogs (if you enjoyed Box of Moonlight, you'll like this one)
Twin Falls, Idaho
Jackpot (also by the Polish brothers; one of the saddest movies I've ever seen)
Northfork (Polish brothers again; story is a little, er, obtuse, but the photography is spectacular)

I've been watching a lot of foreign movies lately. If you don't mind the subtitles, some of them are really good.
Like Water For Chocolate (mexico)
Nine Queens (argentina)
Run Lola Run (germany)
Things I Left in Havana (spain)
Amelie (france)
Man on the Train (france)
The Devil's Backbone (spain)
Open Your Eyes (spain)
Nine Queens (argentina)
Good call, Cycletourist. I forgot about this one. I think I read somewhere that there is an American remake in the works.
The lead actor, Ricardo Darin, is also in another pretty good Argentinian film, The Son of the Bride.

Good call, Cycletourist. I forgot about this one.
The ending of Nine Queens really blindsided me- I never saw it coming. That doesn't happen very often at the movies.
Another vote for Jim Jarmusch here, I love Dead Man. if you like Neil Young see this movie. If you can watch Ghost Dog in the same sitting, great combo.
I just saw Hedwig & the Angry Inch last night... Fantastic!!
Also... Rat is a must see too.

My to-watch list is getting huge now. Which his sweet.
My personal preferences tend to run towards indie (indie-ish, at least) Asian films. To that end, a few recommendations.
Anything touched by Wong Kar Wai, Eric Kot, and/or Christopher Doyle. Chung King Express, Fallen Angels, Fist Love - Litter on the Breeze, Happy Together, Motel Cactus, Away With Words, etc.
Anything by Japanese director SABU (http://www.sabu-film.com/) is very cool too. I'm particularly fond of Drive and Monday. Still trying to get my hands on the 4 of his 7 films I haven't seen yet.
The Thai film Last Life in the Universe is amazing.
Finally, while I can't remember who directed it, there's a Japanese film called Dragon Heat that could very well be the single most post-modern thing EVER. Seriously. EVER. I love it, but it gives most people a headache within the first ten minutes.

Jin Roh- not indy, but certainly not main stream... it's animated but not, you know, DBZ "animated" very good.
City of Lost Children- creepy French goodness... now that I think of it, I'm not sure if that's Indy either...
um... c'mon...
well I can't actualy think of any Indy movies that are availible outside of NE PDX... damn.
El Mariachi! There you go, the original "desperado" (sp?) with such a low budget they only used one take on every scene. Very creative, fun.
a good bicycle related movie i saw a while ago was 2seconds.
i really like movies by hal hartley, but they aren't for everyone. kinda slow moving. i would definately recommend dead man, such a good movie. also blue, white and red trilogy by krzysytof kieslowski, blue being my fave.
a really, really good movie that no one ever seems to have heard about but loves after they watch it is grace of my heart.
oh and anything with juliette binoche in it.

I really like Pedro Almodóvar. His movies are sooooo great. I especially like "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios". I think that's my favorite out of all of his movies.

buffalo '66 - vincent gallo wrote, directed, edited, produced and stared in this film, which was shot primarily in 35mm, and in some scenes (flashbacks) 16mm. brilliant.
