General Cycling Discussion - Drop bars on Mountain bike?

It's time to replace the bars on my Mountain bike. It's my commuter and hardly gets ridden off-road. I'm going to go the cheap route and use parts I already own.
I'm more comfortable with drop bars so I'm going to out a fairly new set on the mtb.
I'm not asking about parts compatibility or fitting,(everything works, I've also put on a shorter stem). I'm just wondering if anyone else has done this and what differences have you felt in terms of fit, control, and general ride impressions.

This isn't as strange as it sounds. Back in the 80s, it wasn't altogether uncommon to see MTB racers like John Tomac and Juli Furtado riding with drop bars. Of course, they had rigid forks then... I imagine suspension forks might make it a bit dodgy...

oh yeah...I am using a rigid fork.

Go for it... And let me know... I've always wanted to do this with my city bike. Don't think of it as a MTB with drop bars, think of it as a cyclocross bike with small wheels.

I have seen a few MTB's with drop bars and thought they looked extremely cool somehow.

A few of the pictures in "The Birth of Dirt" confirm that some highly-regarded mountain bikers have used drops. I have considered putting drops on my Schwinn, because I find mountain bars uncomfortably wide, particularly in traffic, and my hands get numb from having only two places (including my extensions) to grab the bars. I think barcons would be the ideal shifters for such a conversion.
