Road Cycling - Weakling but still has dignity

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
well that's the problem of a weakling yet very proud cyclist(me)
who wouldn't ride a triple chainrings bike but still swear in the long
climbs.
the granny gearset is 39x25 but I need something easier
so I thought about swapping the cassette with a granny of 28-30t.
which should be fine.9-spd of course and durable.
any recommendations ?

Your lowest rear cog is 25 t?
Your front chain ring (one) is 39t.
correct?
The small chain ring is referred to as the granny.
Rear if is a larger cog as the lowest. ( if I replaced the 25 with a 28t) Is called a bail-out gear.
25 is not very large- you have to be conservative if only replacing one cog as it's a big reach.
28 yes with one cog.
30 may require a new cog set to ramp up to the 30.
You'll need a long cage der.
You could also reduce the tooth on your chain rings?
I run a single now and am going 36-38.
I run seven rear 12-28 and am 0.K.
Ask how much of a jump in teeth you can ramp from the 2 to lowest cog. I'm really not sure of the amount of teeth a bail is able to jump.
If you run 2 chain rings I would just reduce the tooth on the smaller chain ring by 2?
looking over my note,... what a bunch of ****.
Replace the cogset.
Aw heck, better go buy a new bike (lbs quote) :)
does shimano make 12-30 or 13-30 9spd cassettes ?
can the ultegra der. handle 30t cogs ?

The biggest Ultegra cassette I'm aware of is 12/27, though you can switch accross to the MTB groups and get Deore XT 11/32 (or 11/34) cassettes. I'm not aware of anything in between.
An Ultegra rear derailleur is specified to handle a max sprocket of 27. For a 32, I've been told you need to change to an MTB derailleur.

You won't ride a triple, but you'll put nine on the rear. That makes no sense at all. You would rather make a fashion statment than have the right equipment to get the job done??? Here is a solution....keep the double and get MTB shoes. They are easier to walk in. :D
Oh, if you haven't noticed, I ride a triple. ;)
Nothing wrong with the triple. I do lots of rides with Pro/1/2 racers with my triple and nobody gives me any grief about it.

If you can afford to spend the bucks, I'd suggest a triple.
A 53/42/30 triple would allow you to keep a tight 11-23 cogset for fast pack riding, plus give you a whole range of climbing gears. It will cost you big bucks, but it has a lot of advantages over a wide-ratio cluster.
Plus, have a triple will give your buddies an easy excuse for why you beat them up the steep climbs...it will let them "preserve their dignity" while you wait for them at the top.

What a strange form of pride!!
I ride a triple, and I also had my 30 changed to a 28.
So what?
Helps me get around more easily.
Isn't that what biking is for?
Not to make some "HE-MAN" statement!
