Does anyone bring shortwave radios with them while touring? I am thinking about buying a solar/crank powered shortwave radio for my touring this year.

I used to, but the last time I went on a trip I couldn't even get the BBC or Radio Canada International. All that was on was religious programming or Voice of America in b-e-g-i-n-n-e-r-s E-n-g-l-i-s-h. Unless your travelling outside of North America and Europe, the internet has pretty much killed short wave.
Instead I download tunes in MP3 format to my Palm Pilot and hit internet cafes on the road.

There is a place called CCrane that has a radio called the Freeplay Summit that can either be wound or solar powered and comes with a clock/alarm and is fairly compact. Picks up AM/FM and SW.

yes, always carry a shortwave for news and weather. have a small
sony 12-band, model ICF-SW10. weighs about a pound, runs on two
AA btys. you should be able to download frequencies and times
for bbc and deutsche welle programming.
