I'm thinking about biking McMinnville to Portland. Looking at a map, looks like the most direct route is 99W. How is 99W for bikes; is there a shoulder? Is there lots of traffic? I think the answers are no and yes, respectively. If I'm correct, is there an alternate route that would be safer?

Yes you can take 99, it has a shoulder, but it is an awful road to ride, so much traffic. This map has a much nicer route, but it is a bit less direct. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2272916

I occasionally ride 99W from Tigard to Sherwood and find it reasonable although at least one bridge is inconvienent for a cyclist. I also use 99W to get to downtown Portland and find that a safe ride, again there are two bridges where there is no bike lane but at that point the cagers are used to having bikes on the road. Also it's a good climb up out of Tigard so the 7-8 miles of downhill riding once you leave Tigard are nice.
If you try it, use Main St through Tigard (parallels 99w where 99W goes over the railroad), No bike lane on 99 at that point.

Thanks for the information. I ended up running out of time because of the bus schedule, so, I ended up in Portland via the bus instead, and not making it to McMinnville. But, someday I hope to.
