Southern California - Are you doing the Rosarito ride next week? Can I ride with you? I have money! :)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello all... I'm somewhat new to the SoCal area (1 year) and just found out about this Rosarito-Ensenada ride a few weeks ago! I haven't found anyone on this side of the border that I know who is interested in doing the ride with me. People are scared of 50 miles! Hehe... Don't really want to travel down there by myself and am looking for someone or a few people who are going down next week. Perhaps I can join up with you! :thumb:
I've done two MS 150 events back in TX and would ideally like to start at the 9:45 AM "Elite Start" to stay with the 15mph + group. Of course this means we get to the finish, and the beer, sooner than the rest. :D
Figured hitting up the BikeForums of SoCal would be a good place to start.
About the money comment... I'd absolutely be willing to split up gas or whatever and if you have a hotel in Ensenada for the night I could help pay for the room and just crash on the floor!
Hope to find some good peeps to ride with!
Cheers,
Cory

I don't think it's the 50 miles. Most are avoiding the corruption and trouble we so much hear about. Plus most of the riders here, including myself have done the ride 7 times or more in the past!:D

Most the people here that carpool and room together know one another and have for a long time now. Heck I'd be worried to take along and sleep with a person that just joined today. Might be a Ted Kennedy or sumthin',errr I mean Ted Bundy!
I wouldn't take a chance of getting hacked in Mexico for 40 bucks!:p

mr. beanz,
thanks for the feedback! fortunately for myself i joined this site in Sep 2006, not today! also, i have plenty of pictures from my past MS 150 rides which should clarify that i'm an average fun loving bike rider who gets along with anyone in any group.
cheers,

If you can make it to San Diego, You could probably go with the group we're going down with (I think they still have room ?) We're only going down for the day though. Good luck!

Cory,
I was in the same boat as yourself for the April ride. I posted trying to carpool but had no luck (I am not a serial killer.) I took the train and a bus to Mexico. I live in Long Beach which is very close to MB so this way will work for you...Get to Union Station (via bus #439 or take the metro light rail). Take Amtrak to San Diego (Santa Fe). From there, take the trolley (blue line??) to San Ysidro. Walk across the border and look for ABC bus company. Take the bus to Rosarito. It should cost about $5 (for you and your bike) and take about 30 minutes. The bus will drop you and your bike off at the toll station. From there you ride a few blocks to the starting point.
Once in Ensenada, ask where you can find a bus to TJ. Someone will tell you it is a few blocks away. When you find the bus, jump on and give the driver $11 to take you to the bus depot in TJ. From there you walk to the border crossing and wait some time to cross. Once across the border, jump back on the trolley heading to Santa Fe station.
Don't bother with that outback adventure bus service. It is expensive and one must wait too long to get back across. It isn't worth the hassle or money from what I am told. Keep in mind that I am a female who went alone. No one bothered or harassed me or my bike. This isn't to say nothing will happen to you but the choice is yours. Good luck on whichever way you decide to get down there next weekend.

Saw this (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/bik/846102378.html) in craigslist just now:
Split the gas 2 Rosarito - Ensenada ride 27th Sept. (greater LA) (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/bik/846102378.html)
And yet no one sees how inconvenient this all is for just a 50 mile ride?

I'd have to say I liked the ride. Good fast ride but I spent just about as much time at the sitting at the border as I did on the ride. Too bad it isn't a Cali ride, I'd do it again!
The 6 or 7 times I did it, spent a couple hundred to go in with a couple of buds to rent a beachhouse. 3 hour drive, and 2 hours at the border for a 2 1/2 hour bike ride. Not to mention the buds started acting like morons so not much fun anymore!:D
It's a ride I think most will enjoy, but 8 times is more than Lance!:roflmao2:

Great thing about socal. So many choices. Something for everyone.
This ride is a perfect example, from travelmama's adventure on public transportation- to the buds renting a beach house for the weekend. spinerguy is right "it's all about the adventure". However you do it.

Indeed it was all an adventure for me. I am all about adventure and exploration. I wanted to know if it could be done and I found out. I usually don't work on Friday so I had time to do it. I have a friend in La Mesa so I stayed with her two nights. I waited maybe 35 minutes to cross the border with my bike. The lines of cars and buses were mad. I could not imagine sitting for hours to cross.
My Spanish is asi-asi especially when I toss in some Italian. I am understood and do understand enough to get by. I did not need to know any to handle my business because everyone I encountered spoke English.
I would do this ride again but I am commited to the three day triathlon in Tahoe next weekend. That will be yet another adventure for me.

Indeed it is about the adventure BUT ON MY BIKE. When I do recreational rides/centuries (VERY RARE) that are not challenging, I ride my bike to them.
For example, the Old Pro's ride (50 miler) July 4th I ride to and from the ride and get 150 miles for the day.
or when I did the Palm Springs Century I rode from Encinitas which was 118 miles with 9K of climbing on Friday. On Saturday did the PS century and then rode back on Sunday another 118 miles.
Or on the Stagecoach Century, when I rode from Encinitas to El Centro through the snow in Pine Valley (4000 ft elevation) and other places on Friday and then did the SC Century on Saturday. Honestly, you guys have fun. I just want to share a different point of view. .

vireo, your stories (and brandy's) are very interesting but sometimes you come off pretty snobby and elitist. Not everyone can ride from LA to Rosarito Fridaynight and then do the ride to ensenada and then ride back to LA. 50 miles might be a good ride if he is just getting back into cycling and there is nothing wrong with trying it once. I haven't done this ride but am interested in doing it. I haven't decided if I will or not. It won't be challenging for me, but it will be a change of scenery and believe it or not after 5 years living in North County I have never been to Mexico.

If you ever get to know me on a personal level you will just consider me intense. You are welcome to join me on a ride sometime anytime. You are right up the road from my work (Encinitas).
My previous post was generic it wasn't directed to anyone in particular.
Oh I just remembered another ride I rode my bike to was the Alpine Challenge and after finishing the ride I rode home from Alpine and trained a client on the San Diego coast including repeats on Torrey Pines.
It's probably 5 years since I have been to Mexico as well.

With no lattes? Now that IS rugged.

Does a doppio espresso count? They're easier to drink... on the bike ;)

what shop do you work at or own or whatever? I would def. stop in. Although I am sure I can't hang with you on climbs or the speed. But I've only been cycling for a few months.

I work at Nytro. You can hook up with me tomorrow (WED) as I commute home. I leave the shop at 4pm sharp. We can hook up along the way or you can come to the shop and start with me. You can turn around at anytime. It is a coastal route from Encinitas to Camp Pend. Bring ID and of course your helmet for entry to the base.

George, I think that's pretty cool of you to offer. I hope the stomach has calmed down.

Yes my stomach is much better -- finally. This thing lasted from Wed night to Sunday night. Timing is everything!

I really appreciate the offer. This week i am working "onsite" and probably won't be back at the lab until after 4. Or Else I would def. join you. I would ride from my work in Vista to Palomar, to the beach, to Nytro and we could go from there. I was in the marines, so getting on base is not an issue, I'm still in the IRR until 2011. How far would we be going?
