This really goes for anyone and anywhere, but since Chicagoland is where I commute I'm posting here.
Lock up EVERYTHING on your bike if your park it outside.
Due to a brainfart, momentary lapse in judgement, or just plain dumb@ssed decision making, my front wheel got stolen. Usually I take my beater, but today I took my "nice" bike, with my "nice wheels" to work. I also usually use two locks. Today I used one lock since the key got stuck in the second lock, and I couldn't get it out. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, just take the wheel with me, or take it off and lock it to the rear wheel/frame. Today I was stupid, stupid, stupid...I just left it unlocked. It shouldn't have been a shock to find it missing after work, but there I was all dressed up and no way to go anywhere. I was lucky enough to have a coworker that drove in today so the rest of my bike is now in his trunk so nothing else gets stolen off the bike overnight. (I can't take the bike on the train during rush hour).
So this is really just a reminder to keep EVERYTHING locked. One "duh" moment could cost a lot of money and time wasted. BTW if anyone sees a Reynolds Alta Race front wheel with Michelin P3R's for sale on the street for $10, buy it, and beat the seller with it for me because it's most likely mine. I'm done venting.
On a positive note...I MAY make the Psimet Invitational albeit on mismatched wheels.
