I am looking to buy a cross bike to maybe race a few cx races, but more importantly ride through out the winter. I go to school where winter is 5 months long, with constant snow (250 inches a year) I figure I could slap some studded tires and fenders on the bike, and ride it on non blizzard days.
I'm looking to spend under a grand, and would rather spend less then more. I refuse to get Sora, but wouldn't be completely opposed to Tiagra. Since I might race, nothing with discs.
The 08 K2 Enemy comes with full 105, and I can get it for 900 shipped to my doorstep. Should I jump on it?
If not, what other bikes should I look at. I'm not really concerned about fender mount tabs, as I have read a few options of fenders that don't need them come winter time.
I'm perfectly happy with my 07, thuough honestly its nothing special. I've done a lot of mods (though none expensive) such as converting it to 1x9, changing the cockpit arounda few times, saddle, etc in order to make it suit my needs better. The stock gearing on mine was 38 x48, and on the 08 they made it even less of race gearing. You'd never need to touch a 50t ring in a race.
If I were you I'd cosnider disc brakes. They're only banned at higher levels, really, and a few very large races. For winter training I'd take BB7s over cantilevers any day. The motobecane outlaw would be a solid and inexpensive choice, also shipped to your door.

I was just looking at that bike too! It's the same price as the Scattante. The other bikes I considered are: Surly Crosscheck (which I ended up ordering), and BD Fantom Cross Pro. In the end, I wanted a steel frame so I ended up picking the Surly. Also ordered 10 Speed Ultegra STI from ebay, so I'll need to get the cable routed the "Sheldon Way" to run 9 speed gearing with 10 speed shifter. Once PBK has 10 speed cassettes back in stock, I'll do the conversion to 10 speed.
Note: I am not obsessed with 10 speed, just with brifters, and it's cheaper to get 10 speed than 9 speed I find, if I want to get new. Used prices are just astronomical on ebay!

I ended up pulling the trigger on the K2. At performance bike, all K2's were on sale, so the price pre-discount codes was 999, then with a 15% off coupon, it was 850. Pulled the trigger on friday. Checked on Performance bike today, and the price shot up about $300.
It showed up today. Overall, nothing really bad to say about it. Kinda weird that it came with an FSA front derailer (didn't know they made derailers) but overall, solid quality throughout. Nothing stellar, nothing crappy. Just what I need in a cross bike.

Congrats! It's definitely a nice bike for the price. I looking forward to picking up my Surly tomorrow or maybe the day after. Just got the Ultegra SL shifters I ordered off ebay, and will be putting those on instead of dealing with bar-ends. When probikekit gets cassettes back in stock, I'll upgrade the cassette too so that I'll have a 10 speed.
