I will be taking some non bikers on their first field trip. We will ride the Norwottuck Rail Trail from Northampton Mass to Amherst. Its paved, low grades and a good place to start...............if.................:(..its open.
As I left work yesterday someone told me it might be closed for pavement problems. I checked the online site and its open again but the rumors persist. In an attempt to be green, someone put a high glass content in the paving mix. Over the years, the glass has been working up and out of the pavement and this year there seem to have been quite a large number of flats. I'm thinking about taking the MTB and its large knobbies instead of the Rabbit. My friends will not be very fast.
At any rate there will be pie. If you see me today, I will be smiling, so smile back....:)

Report to follow
Ok Out at 9.30 and as Ross needed some Hill road work- took him up his first couple. Only a 10% for a mile- swiftly followed by a 12% for about the same distance although it felt longer. Then hit the headwind for the long drag of about 5% for two miles to Beachy Head. He did well and the riding pics are of this area. You can see the Offroad hills in the background and both of us were looking at them wondering why we were playing with the traffic. Then it was PIE Time. Ross had Banoffie and I had the Apple. It was that big so I then struggled for the couple of miles to the MUP. That MUP was crowded today but pleased to say that the Muppets behaved themselves. One call out that we were coming and the dogs and kids brought under control and they all left us a clear passage. So just under 30 miles- 1600 ft of climbing and just had a Toasted Cheese and Onion Sandwich as The PIE had been worked off during the ride.
Still hungry though so might be worth another quick ride this afternoon.
That 6th picture shows one of the Georgian Manor Houses in our area. Built sometime in the late 1700's and is up for sale if any of you want a 16 bedroom house in 4 acres of Scrubland.

Accompanying Donna to her company picnic. I should cut up a tree toppled by the remnants of Ike as it came through Kentucky. If it doesn't rain(which we could use here), the tree might wait while I get a ride in.
This morning, I am putting the finishing touches on my 'sermon' for the weekend, I have a wedding this afternoon and then confessions, Mass and Baptisms in the evening... SO I am working too. No time for a pie ride................However I may find the pie anyway or something as a good substitute.
keep up the good work.
In about 2 minutes I am riding my Schwinn to the 27th annual Wavecrest Woodie meet.

Nice pix Stapfam! I'm off to a wedding today. Pie ride will have to wait til tomorrow.
We're joining our group for a 40-miler today and stop for lunch/brunch about midway. I'm hoping there will be pie on the menu -- if not, maybe we can pick some up on the way home.
And Stapfam wins for the first one to eat pie today....... and for the best-looking ride food on the planet! :)

Even I thought it was a bit on the large side but it is Pie Ride Day- so just do a few extra miles to work it off
And the cups have very thick walls so the Amount of coffee inside is not that enormous.
Hold on- You are Americans- Living in the land of 16oz steaks and gallon pots of Icecream!!!!
And one pic I should have posted showing the other scenery of open Scrubland. This was where we hit the 10mph headwind up the long drag.

Pie day starting badly for me. I brought my Univega ("my rain bike") into the kitchen last night to install new chainrings since it was forecast to rain today and I wanted to go for a ride rain or shine. After taking off the old chainrings, discovered that the crank puller I thought I had in the bottom of my tool box has gone missing.
So the bike is unridable, and I'm waiting for the bike shop to open...
But, totally by coincidence, my wife made a pie last night and I had a piece while working on the bike, just after midnight.:)

Left the house at 0730 on my quick 10 miler (actually 9.88) and got a good workout in the headwinds. Came home and sucked down a diet pepsi and ate one of those boxed apple pie thingies the wife gets, so I had "pie on the fly". :D

All right.........I did the ride but got NO PIE. I took my newbies on a 20 mile ride and like the faithful sheep dog, hovered near the rear of the pack handing out water, encouragement. I'm proud of them, they completed the 20 miles which was far above anything they had tried before.)
The restaurant on the ride was closed..........not just closed but gone, empty, devoid of food, machinery, people and Pie...
We finished the ride and since everyone was starving we wandered over to a small seafood place near the trail head. No pie........not even peperoni.. I finally had a very good meal from the salad bar, but sometime this weekend, somebody had better put me and pie in the same place at the same time...:D

Don't you find those wheels to be a bit slow and heavy?
First weekend back home.
I did 22+ miles in Central Park on a crappy rental last Saturday
Today, with my OCR, on my turf, I had to be able to do at least that much.
So, I set off to do my typical 200' to 0' to 660' to 0' and back again.
I wasn't sure before I set out but I did find my legs to be OK for the ride.
22 miles later, I'm heading for our local bakery -Mazzetti's- for a well-earned slice o' pie.
"Pie? We have cake slices down on this shelf"
"Yeah, but do you sell pie by the slice?"
"Pie by the slice? No, we don't do that"
"Dang."
So, I struck out?
Ahhhh, bless Mrs S, again.
She knew it was pie day and, just in case, she brought a little something home for me from the market.

Only 22 miles total, so I'm not sure we burned off the calories.
Did fifty miles today. (If I could have done 6 more, I would have ridden my age, but it starting getting dark out) I did stop for pie -- only the restaurant didn't serve pie so I made do with a blueberry scone. Will that still count? I had my heart rate monitor which showed how many calories I burned and I don't have to feel guilty about eating the scone! I post the picture if I knew how.

Got to eat two pieces of the lemon meringue pie my my very special wife made for me for pie day. I helped. She took the pictures. The rest is for tomorrow after the metric century with the Green Mountain Bike Club.
We arose at 6:00 am to ride with the group today, 40 miles from the Upper Santa Ana River Trail (SART) to the Hidden Valley Nature Center and lunch at Simple Simon's in Riverside. The SART is a very popular trail for cyclists that begins in San Bernardino and ends at the beach. Riders can pick up the trail from various points and the scenery depends on where they begin and end. It's also a great way to cover a lot of mileage non-stop away from traffic.
In spite of preparing the night before, we got off to a rough start. Hubby took the recumbent that one of the other riders generously loaned to him for a few weeks. We had a hard time figuring out how to secure it in the back of the truck. Then, just as we arrived at the starting point (25 or so miles from home), we realized we left all the water bottles at home. Hubby managed to buy a couple of bottles of water at the Quality Inn next door to the trail head.
And we were off, on a picture-perfect day for a ride.

At the Hidden Valley Nature Center we saw wonderful exhibits of snakes and spiders and saw a lizard that looks like either a giant worm or a very, very tiny snake. We learned that lizards have eyelids and snakes do not, and that's how they can identify this tiny snake-like creature as a lizard.

I fell asleep in the truck on the way home. I heard Hubby say he wants to get his eyes done next (he has cataracts), then I heard "I like the black ones". HUH??? He was referring to the new black Honda Accord that passed us while I was snoozing.

Well, my 70 mile ride turned into 85, but I saw no pie. I did have a lovely blueberry muffin, a banana, some multi grain bread, an order of 'mini-churros' from Jack in the Box, a large chocolate chip cookie, and a Dr. Pepper. The ride wasn't too difficult so I had no problem eating that stuff.
Great pictures everyone, thanks!

I had to combine PIE Ride Day with Pirate day. I left at 7:00 with a buddy to ride "the loop" before meeting up with the rest of the group, now totallying 10 riders. We rode familair roads and stopped at the usual deli for a break. I checked out the pastry case, but nothing caught my fancy. Here is a picture of us on our way back.

Since I did two rides for Pie day I only ate pie after the second ride.
The first ride was the Saturday morning riding program with the local MetroPark. There were 57 riders and many of us gathered afterward at a local restaurant for a late breakfast. No pie...not even a pastry.
The second ride was a moonlight ride on a section of the Little Miami Scenic Trail. There were 14 riders and we had a great time. Riding at night is one of my favorite times of the day. We saw a few critters cross the trail but none that came close to our wheels. I had blackberry cobbler with ice cream but ate it before I thought of taking a pic:( We're planning another night ride in early October so I'll take a re-enactment photo of the event;)

I didn't really ride. I sagged for a century ride.
Didn't even get 1 mile from the start and found a cluster of riders by the side of the road. Somebody hadn't installed their inner tube right so they deflated the tire and reinstalled it. I came along just in time to offer the use of a real floor pump.
The second "rescue" was a woman who punctured, fixed her own flat and immediately flatted again. Unfortunately for her she had 650c wheels so nobody, including me, had a spare tube the right size. I did, however, have a patch kit. I patched both tubes (the second one was a pinch flat), and she finished the century.
I also did a quickie rear derailleur adjustment and trued a fairly new wheel for a fellow who had a bunch of loose spokes. He needs a full retensioning job. That's not much work for a 10 hour day. If I had charged full shop prices for everything that I did it wouldn't even cover my gasoline costs.
NO PIE :sigh: I think that's my own fault. Next year I think that I'll negotiate for a complete Dutch apple pie from a local bakery if they want me to sag.
Today is overcast and looks like rain. I'm going to spinning class in the morning and watching the Rams game with some friends in the afternoon.
How's that working out Yen? Does he enjoy riding it?
'dude, thanks for asking. He loves riding it. He says it's a much better leg work-out yet he feels so good otherwise that he could keep going all day. His left shoulder was stiff later, but I think there could be scar tissue or adhesions left over from surgery that is causing that. The joint itself is fine.

Saturday, I was going to ride down to a diner I know in Albany that has good pie but when I called they were out of blueberry. I rearranged my ride plans to go to Troy's (NY) Chowder Festival. I took a small plastic container with me and stopped at a diner close by. I asked for a small slice of blueberry pie to be put in the container, when she returned the container was packed full of pie!
I followed the Erie Canalway Trail to it's end in Cohoes and then surface streets to Troy, about 22 miles .
At the chowder fest. I sampled a few and then ran into a restaurant owner I know, he gave me a larger portion of his excellent New England clam chowder. I walked the bike down to the marina and ate on the dock. I ate all of the chowder. The pie portion was huge and I ended up giving half of that to a Golden Retriever that was hanging around. He approved of the pie.
I rode back up the other side of the river for a total of 45 miles.

Sat. I rode with another 50+ BF member NealH on the 60 mile Tour de Tuck which had over 6000' of climbing. We managed a 3:55 ride time/4:11 total in perfect weather. Today we joined some other riders for a 34 mile "recovery" ride. I don't think 20+ mph average is a recovery pace especially when there is over 1500' of climbing. Another beautiful day though.
