YOU CAN JOIN A SOCIAL GROUP!!!!!

Click on your name and look at the lower right side of the page, and YOU CAN JOIN A SOCIAL GROUP!!

OK, 50+'rs, help me out here.

We need to think of what "social groups" are appropriate for 50+'rs.

I would think NOT "social diseases" but one never knows.

How about some titles for 50+ "social groups!"

Sorry, this is worth a serious reply.

I'm a member of Ravelry.com, a fantastic, large on-line community of knitters, crocheters and spinners (of yarn, not bikes). It has groups and friends and more, like what BF is adding now. Based on the groups I've seen there, I might suggest for here:

50+ 'Bent Riders
50+ Racers
Bike 'n Knit (for cyclists who are also knitters)

I've run out of ideas and these names aren't especially creative but this gives you an idea. Ravelry includes groups for discussion of favorite TV shows, religious groups, political persuasion, recipes, you name it.

Not fair.

My first post was purposely neutral (well, almost neutral) on purpose.

I was interested in how it would be taken!

Is there a social group for people (like me) who are too dumb to understand what this thread is even talking about?

Didn't think so...I'm gonna go eat some pie all by myself.

Thank you. For a while I wondered if I was too dense and missing an inside
joke here or something. Then my cynical side started taking over but you
beat me to the punch. Now I'm just enjoying the irony of social groups
needing to join a social group. I love it.

So I reply in kind and I'm not fair?

Bike 'n Knit (for cyclists who are also knitters)

This is one I can't join. My friends tried to teach me to knit...said it would be relaxing. After a couple weeks all I wanted to do was stab someone with those needles:twitchy:

I like doing something while I watch TV or vanpool and I especially like the creations. That said.... I understand the frustration though. I've had many a night when I thought I'd sit and relax and knit while watching TV, only to knit a few rows, rip them out, start over, knit some more, rip it out, start over............ and 2 hours late I got NOTHING done. I've put it away in the closet, only to pull it out a day or two later and begin again. I've really wanted to do this for many years after seeing the beautiful projects others created. It's a little like clipless riding -- it takes practice, practice, practice. I will not quit! :)

I will try to give a serious answer:
My computer Favorites Center has a list of Blogs and links which I need to follow. Many daily.
Financials dominate and a few what could be called social. Many of these social groups are niche groups. Very specialized.
The BF 50+ is such a group. I can get biking related answers as well as communicate with bikers on a broad range of issue but remember that it is bikers I am talking to.
Let us say that I want to discuss the economy. Would I not be better served to address a more general audience? Getting an opinion from an audience preselected may not be good.

Titanium club is a yellow jersey, as well as being $25 a year?!?

Now I really don't get it.

I'd be in for a bike and knit group though. Provided it's not both at the same time, and provided I don't have to pay $25 a year for the privilege. I mean that's more than 25 Canabucks now and all.

Titanium is $25 PER YEAR and has its own forum, I think they have free coffee and an executive washroom.

Red Star is $25 once, and, well, you know how much trouble that has gotten you into!

What I don't get is why they did it, other than to boost the revenue stream, and create the situation where Red Star members can be "motivated" to upgrade. There's a thread somewhere that explains it.

I was not a red star member. Actually, my wife (the spouse who's the fanatic) bought it for me. I haven't noticed much difference except for the difference in thread tools. It seems that I have the ability to 'ignore' forums, and I can 'ignore' specific threads as well. I'm not sure how that works. I'm going to explore more and see what makes it worth $25 a year.

I seriously do not understand the need for social groups. If I have something to post, I'll post it in the appropriate forum. What else do I need? If they make it exclusive to certain members, paying or social groups, then I'll just take my posts elsewhere. It all rings too much of high school for me.

Just remember this, without our posts this site is worth nothing and will get no advertising revenue. So shouldn't they pay us? If not pay us with cash, then at least make the site as user friendly as they can and offer all services for free.
