Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - My new bike (short) story

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've been riding a Trek 800 Single Track since the summer of 2000 and enjoy it a lot. Most of the time I ride on pavement so I put nice road tires on it plus lights and a computer. Everything was going great until I got the road bike bug last year. Plus my wife rides a road bike and gets good speed out of it. So I searched Craigs list and bought an old Schwin Varsity for $60, what a mistake. It's not collectable, the weight of a boat anchor, and it has the very odd Shimano FFW (front free wheel) system, but I found that I liked riding a road bike. Other Craigs list bikes were either too $$ or the wrong size. So today I got a new Jamis Ventura Sport '08 model from a new LBS and he took good care of me. I'm pleased!
...and my Trek will be used on gravel and mild trails, the old Varsity will RIP.

Give the Varsity to someone. Never dispose of a working bike.
+1 pass the Schwinn along. Congrats on the new bike.

Nice bike. I've never ridden a Jamis, but think it is a bike I would like.

OOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's Red. Gonna be fast, and with the optional white bar tape, even faster:thumb: +100 on style points, lol.
I'm surprised Jamis doesn't get more press. They make a great bike and provide great value. One thing is that they are more difficult to find, at least in my area.
Hey, there are a lot of folks who like those old Varsity's. Yes they are a tank, but remember most of their riders back in their day were teenagers who thought nothing of maintenance and care. They spent their days being dumped on dismount, curb hopping, gawd knows what else. The fact there are still tons of them around are a testament to their heritage. Somewhere there is someone who could use it.
Thanks, I put 30 miles on my Jamis the day I got it. Any one interested in a vintage bike needs to do their homework first. The cost and time someone would have to put into that old Varsity made me buy a new bike, and those steel wheels YUK! That bike is a curiosity at best.
