I saw this on MSN's home page today, I couldn't resist commenting on it.

This goes far beyond the "save on gas with these cars" type articles. It's hilarious that people are so hung up on conspicuous vehicles.

Let's face it, being single and wanting to be in a relationship isn't easy, no matter what age you are. Much like our animal cousins, when we are looking for a suitable mate we prance about in the hopes of getting the opposite sex's attention.

For animals, it's easy (at least, we think it is) -- animals normally have some sort of extravagant display of affection that includes loud noises and bright colours that attract their mate. For humans, it should be just as easy, especially considering the size of our brains. But for some strange reason we make things more complicated. But we still find ways.

If you break it down between sexes, women can normally get a man's attention by wearing something skimpy, sleek and sexy. Men are at the other end of the spectrum - think big, loud, flashy.

And cars fit both bills.

Over the decades, men have mostly been the ones to use vehicles to impress women. In recent years, women have jumped on that bandwagon: there are more and more women tuners and car enthusiasts who capture men with their beauty and automotive intellect.

Whatever happened to being a decent person with similar ideas, goals and values?

Go watch some rap videos, you will get an idea of how important those things are to the younger generations.

Being an anthropologist I have to comment on the hilarity of this article. The author talks about men getting the attention of women with "big, loud and flashy" things as if it has been going on for hundreds of years throughout our evolution and women just wear something "skimpy." As if these are somehow human universals. In many cultures these roles are either reversed or completely non-existent. Take Java for example (my speciality is in sociocultural anthropology in South East Asia). Here the women are the "loud and flashy" sex, they are the ones who are considered unrefined and lacking in manors. Men are the symbol of the family rather than women and are expected to act the part by being very restrained all of the time. The way this works out is that women control all of the money in the households and essentially have trophy husbands that are prone to spending all of the women's hard earned income! Sound familiar? Point being is that Americans like to think that we are somehow the pinnacle of cultural achievement and that any other cultural system of thought/logic is backwards. Sorry for the rant but this type of stuff gets my anthro brain going!

Oh come on guys, don't take the bait.

Any headline that starts with "Top 10 reasons for...." or "5 ways to tell if your man is...." or "The 15 best foods for....." or "10,982 reasons you should..." you automatically know it's just idiot fodder aimed at nothing other than getting people to click on the headline (thus generating ad revenue). People who click on those headlines don't even have the attention span to finish the damn article.

You know isn't there something to be said for the increased fitness, endurance and virility caused by cycling?
