Silly question - if you've been to governor's island - any problems leaving your bike while you go into the buildings? I don't own a lock and don't really want to buy one this morning.

Gov island is really beautiful! You will love it. But seriously, you live in NY and don't own a lock? Unless your bike is worth $20 or less, it's time to get one. A good one too.

A good lock is a basic investment unless you want to see your bike go 'bye-bye.' (Of course, sometimes you can get your bike stolen even with a lock--no antitheft system is foolproof--but leaving a good bike out in the open unlocked is just saying "Come and get it!")

I never lock my bike. Then again it's never out of my eyesight ;)

Most people there are fine. There's only one way on and off the island - someone would have to be very ballsy to attempt to go to the island with the intent of stealing a bike and taking it away on the ferry. A simple phone call would lock the ferry down and they'd find him.

That said a simple chain would probably be good enough unless you have a super expensive bike. Or take a wheel in with you.

That must limit you a great deal. There are so many places where you can't take your bike--what happens when you have to go to such places?

Grab the folder.

Grab the folder.

But your regular bike must be somewhere when you take the folder. How do you secure it?

In my apartment! Everything's pretty close around here - errands I grab the folder, long rides I grab the roadie. Nasty weather the mtb.

But it is still out of your sight.

Not when I bring it inside with me.

Not when I bring it inside with me.

But what about those places that don't allow you to bring it inside with you?

For example, when I go to work I'm not allowed to take my bike into my office with me. When I go shopping, most stores object to my bringing my bike into the store. When I go to Lodge, I can't bring my bike into the lodgeroom. On Sundays, I can't bring the bike into the church with me. When I go to the Public Library, they won't let me take it into the building. Etc.

If you say, "Well, I don't take my bike when I'm going to those places." But that implies that you leave your bike behind, which means that it is out of your site. (Yes, you leave it locked in your apartment--but it is still out of your site. Even when at home, unless you live in a one-room apartment, if you leave it in the living room when you go into your bedroom, your are letting it out of your site, aren't you? And what about when you are asleep?)

Only one place doesn't let me so I put it in a bag and bring it in instead.

Uhm...so yeah, every once in a while I leave it behind. But I still never lock it up on the street which is my point. And I'm within eyesight to them when I got to sleep, cook, and work. I guess not the bathroom except for a reflection.

Not really sure what your point is except harp on semantics here...

Does anybody know if you can bring your bike on the ferry to Governor's Island? My girlfriend is under the impression that you can only rent them on the island.

I'm almost 100% sure that you can bring bike on the ferry. I've been wanting to take a ride out there too at some point.

Yes - I did it two weeks ago.
