What trunk or other type rack would you folks recommend for carrying a pricey bike (like a Cervelo P2C) on a Honda Civic? I've got a relatively inexpensive rear rack that works fine for my mtn bike, but was wondering if the thicker tubing on the tri bikes would be a problem for it. (I haven't bought the tri bike yet.)

If it is an option for you, consider taking both wheels off the bike and putting it in the trunk.

I think it will be fine
I have a Thule rack on the roof.
I borrow my parents' station wagon from time to time but reality is our VW Jetta with dog, wife, bike and tools, bike related junk is MUCH more comfortable than the wagon with bike inside. The bike isn't going anywhere if you've got it setup right and don't hit anything.
My Saris Bones rack works quite well with my P2C. On my Honda Civic. :)
Really, it does work well, and the seat tube strap is long enough to fit around the aero seat tube. I do generally leave the race wheels off when making a long trip.

I found that my Cervelo P2C does NOT fit on my standard trunk-mount bike rack - the thick aero-shaped tubing gets in the way of the rack mount.
However, (fortunately), if I take the front wheel off, the entire bike just fits into my back seat. I couldn't do that with my mtn bike due to the wider handle grips, but the narrow road/aero handles make it easy to fit in through the door.
I like this solution best so far - my pricey bike stays locked up in my vehicle!

OP, good practical question.
This Saris is the best trunk-mounted rack on the market. I hauled a QR Tequilo all over the SW U.S. for years with no problems. If you don't want the complications of installing a roof rack and don't have a hitch, the Saris Bones is by far your best bet.
Good luck!

That's because your race wheels are freaking 100mm deep sails, dude.
Seriously, you'd get like 3 fewer miles per gallon.
