So I raced cross for the first time and nearly finished last. All excuses aside for lack of performance I must say that the worst part was the feeling that my back was being torn asunder. I'm thinking maybe technique has a bit to do with it, or leg strength (since my legs were getting the hurt I couldn't quite "hover" over the ruff stuff). Any advice as to technique or training to alleviate this issue?

As a side note: I don't think I'll ever be placing top 10 riding single speed, but damn I got lapped a lot! Other than that... cross=fun (i think)

Thanks in advance

Lower back? That's a really common problem in cyclocross. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea how to remedy the problem, as it's never happened to me I've never bothered to look up a solution.

Strengthen your core (abs/back) and reduce the amount of drop from your saddle to your bars. Stretch well before you race too.

It really is as simple as strengthening your core. Start with 10 minutes three times a week. After a couple weeks move up to 20 minutes. And you don't have to do just crunches. Throw in some static planks and decline push-ups. Work the obliques, the lower back. Mix it up, experiment with new exercises and treat it the same way you would a hard interval workout. When you are racing next year and realize 30 minutes in that your back isn't screaming at you, you'll know why.

This is pretty much word for word what fix told me last Saturday when I was talking about back pain after my first race.

I'm going to look into this core strengthening stuff.

The reason we love cross isn't because it's easy.

Core strength helps the most, but you may also want to expriement with a slightly higher bar position if you come from the road race scene.

I was told by my friend that you usually push a bigger gear in cross and that strains your hammies, which in turn strains your lower back muscles
