From a trip, a great moment in your existence, or a peaceful memory, maybe one of contentment.

Playing the Abba Greatest Hits 8-track on the new stereo and dancing to the tunes with my momma in the living room. I was about 7 or 8 years old.

...her... had come to visit me, and when I got off work, dinner was waiting for me. It was Mac n Cheese and it was ok, but the last time I dated someone who made me dinner was like 10 years ago. It was really sweet.

When my mom used to take me to have custard pie and hot chocolate once a week. It was just me and her and nobody else. :)

A key moment in my life was in high school when I walked a young lady home, and we stopped at the grounds of a local girl's school in a secluded spot, and sat down to talk.

I was always shy, but I really liked her, so for the first time in my life, I leaned over and kissed her, and she kissed back.

I literally passed out.

My many happiest memories were all spent out in the fields and swamps as a kid. All by myself - I'd get a tickle up the back of my spine as I would head out every morning wondering what I'll catch, what I'll see.

Happy memory...that has to be when my 2yr old sis was thrown out in the snow only wearing her diapers because she was being a screamy, whiny brat. Of course, my mom didn't leave her out *that* long--t'was only 2-3mins, tops--but when she was brought back in, she was well-behaved. I was 7 at the time, and I found it terribly amusing.

Ok, I am a bad, bad person. But...if I ever move to a snowy place, that will be my method of discipline in the winter.

At a camp in what was rural Texas at the time, walking down trails with tall trees forming a complete canopy overhead, something rare here.

Going to the Planetarium with my Dad when I was a kid. It was one of the few times I got 1 on 1 time with him without my siblings competing with me.

I musta been a fisherman (or a fish) in another life - mine always come by the shore - wading in the Mediterranean at age 2, standing in the Pacific about 12 yrs ago, running off hiking trails to some beaches, etc etc.

Oddly, I can't swim, and even odder, I did used to know how - so you really can forget

The times my brother and I used to bike ride through the back trails and go down to creeks looking for bullfrogs and crawdads. Those were happy carefree times.

My first flight on a passenger airliner to San Diego -- from Wisconsin on a bitter cold, overcast morning of December 16th -- and when we reached the altitude above the thick blanket of white cotton cloud, and I saw the clear blue sky and the bright risen sun, man, I was awestruck.

Probably when I was around 12 yrs old ... laying down in a park, looking up at the kite I was flying against a perfect blue sky. One of the most contented, calm moments of my life. I often refer to this memory when I need to calm down.

No, just drunk Indy's handwriting and typing is illegible. Just think how bad it is when I am sober and then imagine how bad it must be when I am drunk.

Sitting in my mother's lap eating a PB&J while she sang me a song. This was a regular thing - I was about 4 or 5. I sure wish I knew what that song was... I can almost remember sme of the words. That was a LONG TIME ago.

High School Orchestra trip. Orlando Fl. She was from Wisconsin. We went outside and sat by the pool and talked. I have connected with very few people the way I connected with her that night. And to make things even better, she looked like a young Daryl Hannah. That night will always be a very pleasant memory.

A couple of weeks ago I had a reunion with 3 people I lived in the college dorms with. We reminisced about the weird & wild stuff we did, and looked at many incriminating photographs. Fortunately I was the record-keeper back then and have all of the photos, and the negatives. :p

The tops of the mountains I've been to. After struggling so hard to achieve something, nothing is more incredible than sitting on top of the world, listening to nothing but sounds that have been going on for millions of years. nothing, and I mean nothing, is more peaceful than that.

Sitting down at a table at Brooklyn's, drink in hand, surrounded by friends, glad to be off my feet after 14 hours of running roller coasters. Working at that amusement park was like summer camp for adults. From April to November, real life was secondary to rides and radio calls and barf jokes and copious amounts of alcohol.

Going out following the coastline, exploring places, collecting pictures. I loved to take pictures of peaceful places. I did that a lot when I was 24.

I remember sleeping next to my wife who was five months pregnant at the time in a tent at our campsite in Volcanoes National Park. The campsite is in a grove of eucalyptus trees, and the fragrance, and coolness of the weather...I don't recall sleeping that peacefully since...that same trip, we swam in a pool under a waterfall in Haleakala. A great peace swept over me and I was with my best friend.

Some of these posts got me thinking back to my childhood. When I was a kid, we used to have a Christmas party each year for all of the neighbors. We made our own pinata out of paper mache and balloons. One year we got carried away and made it a little too thick and no one could break it. My older sister's boyfriend at the time, a football player, had to take a baseball bat to it. I think my mom still has pictures of him wailing on it.

Finishing the Hotter than Hell Hundred back in the 90s. My ride partner and I got separated and I did the last 20 miles or so solo. Did not take real good care of myself on that ride. Had blood in my urine the next day, but I did not quit.

Geez, so many that might qualify...

My grandaddy coming to get me after school in 7th or 8th grade and taking me out to the local Audubon bird sanctuary. I believe that I was his favorite, but don't know and shouldn't care. But I had two younger siblings, so any time alone with him was valuable. His back had to have been giving him trouble by then, but he didn't complain. We walked almost all of the trails, skipped rocks in the creek, and he told me what he knew of the long history of the place. It was a great afternoon that ended all too soon. Within two years he was too sick to do much and died just shy of my 18th birthday.

On Wednesday mornings, my school started an hour later than typical. My mother drove me to school on those days up until my junior year of high school. To this day, I consider that a miracle. For whatever reason, my brothers must have gone in early with my dad. One winter day near the end of Mama's time as my chauffeur, we got an earlier start than typical. We pulled over at the Dunkin' Donuts shop on the way, and Mama said I might want to try something there. That something was a large cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. All the adults in my family drank it, and I'd rarely given it much thought. Nor had I ever tried it. This morning was different. My first cup of coffee. It went down hot and bitter initially, but I wasn't about to give it up. I walked onto campus that day, letterman's jacket on my back, Dunkin' Donuts cup in my hand, and confident almost to the point of arrogance. I swear my friends were jealous. This is nothing like drinking that first beer. But for whatever reason, I felt like I'd been allowed a brief journey into the adult world and was given a talisman to take back with me.

It's funny. I'd almost wager that most of the memories that will be listed on here are not earth-shattering events, but just little things that made us happy at the time and thereby lodged in our hearts.

Hmmm... I can actually think of quite a few. Here are some:

- At the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto, it started raining just as my family reached a small rest spot half-way up the hill. We drank tea and watched the rain.

- Riding bikes with my sister around rice paddies near Kawaguchi-ko, one of the lakes around Mt. Fuji, then returning to the tiny cabin our family visited once a month to soak in a hot bath. Also, just lying in bed (a futon on a tatami floor) in that cabin in the winter and listening to announcements for farmers on the village PA system.

- On a cliff in Warrnambool (or near there), Australia. It was sunset, and the combination of light, strong winds and powerful surf was completely thrilling.

- Riding my new Jamis down Yonge St in Toronto, starting around Eglinton and tearing down to Bloor at a totally unsafe speed

- In a fantastic Russian restaurant in Harbin, northern China. It was around -30C/-34F (edit: Doh! Converted the wrong way... -30C/-22F)outside, but my sister and I were warm inside with great food, bread and tea.
