having read many of the posts on clincher-tubular tires I now understand the difference of the tires...my question is can tubular wheels (specifically cane creek sg aeros) take a clincher tire? I'll be doing the ALC ride in June and will get lots of flats (if past experience is any indication)...thanks/j

I believe the answer is 'no'.

Check out the difference in the profile of the rim:

Tubular:

No hooks on this one for the clincher's bead to grab on to.

(btw these profiles are from a Cane Creek Volos rim, available as both clincher and tubular...)

If getting a clincher wheelset is out of the question for you, look into Tufo tubular tires and their brand of sealant. I've had good luck with Tufo's tubular-clincher tires in combination with their sealant. I've also read of good results of their sealant being used in conventional tubular tire/tube combinations, but I can't offer any personal experience there...

The tublar clincher tires work only on clincher rims, as they are designed for such.
