They first started making noise when i'd be really cranking up a hill, but now they make noise pretty much all the time. any suggestions? they're IRO stock peals, btw...

may not be your pedals, could be your crank arms.
take a 8mm allen wrench and tighten them.
if they still creak alot, your bottom bracket may need to be tightened...
make sure your crank arm bolts have grease on the threads

tighten the crank arms at the BB or at the pedal?
Take your pedals off, put a bead of grease on the threads and put them back on.

im having this same issue. it started when i was riding with only 4 of the 5 chainring bolts installed.
i was having this problem as well. for what it's worth, i have ISO cranks and a JIS spindle. A little grease on the tapers of the spindle where they mate with the crank arms solved the problem.

i had this problem. the cranks needed to be cleaned and re-greased.

Some people say you shouldn't grease square taper spindles because it makes it easier to deform the cranks.
Before doing any of that, I would try squirting a little oil on the pedal frames themselves (like where the frame meets the platform). I have some old SR quill pedals with riveted construction that are great but tend to get squeaky where the metal shifts - goes away with oiling, otherwise harmless. Failing that, tighten pedal spindles, chainring bolts and (gently!) crank arms and see if that does anything.

Also, (i made this mistake), it could be as simple as your straps rubbing on your crank arm... i felt stupid when i discovered i thought i had creaky pedals and it was simply that.

Yeah, I read both sides of the argument. Some manufacturers tell you to grease the tapers, other manufacturers tell you not to. I can't find the article now, but I found a pretty convincing write up about why greasing the tapers won't damage the cranks. Regardless, my problem was creaking between the crank arms and the spindle, and tightening the crank bolts and cleaning the spindle/cranks didn't help - so this was the only option.
I'm telling you, grease the threads on the pedals and see.
I was @ wits end with my mountain bike. I swapped bottom bracket and everything. I greased the threads and silence.
tell us if it's still creaking even after all that...could be rounded arms
