Southeast - What am I getting into?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I currently live in New England where the riding and racing scene is huge. My wife and I are looking at moving to southwest Florida. We have visited before and the riding is great (although no hills). Lots of group rides and generally a lot of bikers out and about. But what is up with the lack of races? Here in New England there are multiple races to choose from every weekend. Seems like there are only a few races in all of Florida. Anyone have different thoughts?

If you move anywhere near Tampa, there are many hills in the san antonio and dade city area. The biggest hill (Sugarloaf) is in clermont, near orlando. Ther are quite a few races also. There are also trails dedicated to cycling in the area that are more than 40 miles long.
Not sure what the lack of regular racing is all about, but if i'm not mistaken, FL does have our lion's share of tri's on the east coast. Just have to have the water to cool off in so riding in the heat isn't as much a problem. Mountains? OK serious shortage of those, but we do have causeway bridges that will keep your mountain legs in shape.
