Well, I've gone and done it. This roadie just won an Ebay auction for a 2004 Kona Dawg! Bow Wow! It's showroom new with less than 10 hours on it, I got it for $1025 + shipping, is that good? I was torn tween the Dawg and a new Ironhorse Hollowpoint expert that's also for sale. The Ironhorse has better components, higher retail price, and is lighter, it's auction ends tomorrow, should I have waited? Will I regret not getting the Ironhorse instead of the Dawg? The Dawg was in the same region of the country (SE) while the IH is in Canada. Actually I'd like to buy them both, ride them, and then sell one. But that's crazy irresponsible right?
Anyway, I've definitely bought the Dawg. I hope I don't regret it. Maybe I should have got a pure XC FS. The Dawg should be an excellent bike, it's just that I'm coming from an old C'dale 3.0 hardtail that is bombproof, and I'm not accustomed to worrying about too much fiddling and maintenance. But the old 'Dale is like riding a jackhammer, and my back really feels it. In comparison this Dawg with a Fox Float R Pro Pedal (whatever that all means) should be very plush and forgiving, but I know very little about full suspensions. My 'Dale weighs 27/28 lbs. and this Dawg will weigh 33. We are rather mountainous here in North Alabama and I'm afraid I'll feel that increase in weight. The Dawg is targeted as an "all mountain" bike or a combo of XC and freeride. Kind of an all around bike. I don't do drops and big air stuff, but our singletrack can get pretty rooty and rocky and we do have the mountains to bomb down, and a little bit of air now and then is fun. This bike should be very rugged, I just fear it is stouter and heavier and capable of bigger drops than I really need and I'll pay the price in suffering on the climbs. I've read lots of reviews that sound really good, but I hope I don't bust a gut going uphill.

Can anyone give me any input on the Kona Dawg? How does it climb in particular? Is it plush? How about the Fox Float R rear shock?

What are your feelings on the 2004 Ironhorse Hollowpoint Expert? The one in question has a RS Psylo SL fork and a 5th Element air rear shock?

Wow a 1000$...jeez...not bad ;)..

You wouldn't go wrong with either. Personally as a Kona fan I would have gotten the dawgy....but hey I would refuse either.

IT climbs well but is built as an all round trail bike. It won't be awesome at dh OR uphill but it will work well for both. If it is 2004 it has the propedal which helps a lot for pedalling. Give it a couple of weeks and you won't notice the weight. I now ride a 43pound fr bike for trail riding and almost never walk up...although I am slow ;)

Yeah, I'd choose the Kona over the IronHorse all day long. You will feel the difference in weight between your old C'Dale and the Dawg, but I think like Mael said, two weeks and you'll get used to it. Plus, the benefits of full suspension and the confidence a burly bike gives you, you'll find yourself aiming for the toughest sections of trail where you used to pick the smoothest sections. The Dawg will change your rding syle. You'll become more agressive without really realizing it.

You done good!
