Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I need a new helmet but the new ones have so many vents that I wonder how good they'd be in the winter. I'm thinking a full face helmet that looks like a motorcycle helmet would be good. But they weight a ton and appear HOT.
AND How come these new helmets don't have reflectant stuff on them??????
Please post what sort of helmet you have! Brag shots and home-made helmet modifications welcome also!

I'd buy the helmet that's well ventilated. You'll be glad that you did come Summer.
In Winter, you have many choices to keep your noggin warm with this helmet. For mildly cold days I wear an old cycling cap. The fashionable thing now is a dew rag type thing.
For cold days I may use a helmet cover. This effectively blocks the wind from coming in the vent holes. Another option that I have for cold days is a baclava. Very versatile and a must have for cold weather cyclists. It's like a thin tobaggon is the best way that I can describe it, but it can cover your neck and even your nose/mouth if you want.

I rode all winter long with a well ventilated helmet.
To stay warm I wore a windproof baclava and even at the very low 17F temperatures we had this winter, I was VERY comfortable.

Now that the temps have heated up (40F +) I wear a windproof hearband and seems to do the trick....

I wear a skul cap under my helmet (Bell Phi) any time the temp drops below 60F. A nice baclava under the helmet works great for sub-freezing temps.
I wear a bandana down to around 20F. Add an ear warmer down to about 10F. Below that the belaclava.
My "best" helmet is a Specialized Enduro. I normally use my old "HEAD LOCK" helmet for commuting etc.

Wow Cool helmet! When I go in the tuck position, I wish my visor was clear (instead of black) for longer range viewing.

N7,
So if you wear a Belaclava and a well vented helmet does your hair still end up wet? My head seems soaked (but warm) no matter how cold it is and that's with an old 9vent Giro.
and whaza HEADLOCK????????

I'm waiting for the new Catlikes to come in at my LBS. I've got a credit that'll cover me for the cost of the lid. I've tried one on and loved the fit.
I just wear a thin ear warmer and sometimes a balaclava underneath. You can also pick up a cover for helmets that close of the holes. I really try to buy for the warm weather and adjust for the cold.

Well, it depends on how hard I push the ride. My commute is only 6.6 miles one way. On the way into work, I don't push real hard as there are no shower facilities. When I get back home, I sometimes have a sweaty head because I push much harder. Actually the outside of the beleclava is usually ice covered. The same can be said for the inside of my wind shell. I stay warm as long as I keep moving.

The helmet I am wearing in my avitar is the HEAD LOCK helmet. I've had it for many years. I don't remember where I purchased it.
EDIT:
You may also post the question about winter helmets in the WINTER CYCLING FORUM to find out what other winter cyclists do. I have included links to a couple of those threads below:

These threads were actually very helpful. The newer helmets have a set of vents at the base of the helmet. But none seem to have reflectant. I have stickers which tend to lift off. It'd be great if the helments reflected light across the whole helmet.
Also a vent that closes when it starts raining????
Bell Ghisallo. Very nice.

Is this because of the recall?????

Have not seen these sold anywhere cool lid
The best helmet is the one that fits your head forward, backwards and to the sides with the least amount of padding. The best helmet for my head was the Louis Garneau (can't recall the model, for some reason they didn't put the model name on the helmet). On cool days I will add a skullcap with ear warmers then on really cold days and/or foggy/rainy days I add a waterproof helmet cover that makes me look like a dork! So what, at least the head is dry.
As far as reflectiveness goes, I went down to my local hardware store (cheaper than the LBS) and bought reflective tape and applied that in a neat fashion on the helmet.

This is my pick: The Specialized M1

The Specialized M1
Well this M1 seems to rate very well with Consumer Rpts so I went down to the shop to check it out. At $80, I settled for this one instead.
It has reflectors on the back and a wind channel that goes from the front of the helmet to the back. Although it fits my noggen, it slides all over.
The helmet is cinched under the chin with the straps snug around the ears. But I can still slide it forward about an inch or back about an inch. It came with some THIN pads but I don't want to put 'em in only to have the thing still not fit good. The Medium seemed snug and I don't know if it'll fit with a winter cap.
How effective are those fitting pads?
TRUE CONFESSIONS the 661 full face seems like the best...but they're probably so Damn hot and sweaty!
