So... After Pcad posts about the Nyack ride at least daily in one of his 20,000 threads, I'm starting to be brainwashed into thinking this ride is the only reason the town even exists. The thing is, one of my favorite bands (lets say top-20) is from Nyack, NY - Coheed and Cambria.

I put it to the all-knowing BF to determine which is Nyack's bigger claim-to-fame: the Nyack ride, or Coheed and Cambria...

Yes, it's late and I should be studying...

The town of Nyack primarily exists so it can have Street Fairs. Spring Street Fairs, Summer Street Fairs, Fall Street Fairs, Gay Street Fairs, etc. I think they have 18 Street Fairs annually. The other reason is the Nyack Ride. I've never heard of 'Coheed and Cambria'.

The Hopper House is, of course, less than 100 meters from the start of the Nyack Ride, hence its notoriety. My favorite E. Hopper painting is East Wind Over Weehawken, mainly because it depicts a street corner I walked past every day on my way to elementary school in the 1960s.

There's no "only when I'm drunk" option. I'll abstain.

If this was a serious post, of course, I would have included "Notable Resident - Rosie O'Donnell" (Yes, I wikipedia'd that tidbit). That would be Nyack's claim to fame as far as 99% of the American public is concerned, not these hippie cyclists or prog-rock bands.

Both are pretty great as far as I'm concerned. I saw them maybe 6 or so years ago with Thursday and Thrice. Thursday kinda sucks, but Thrice was great.

Coheed and Cambria? Didn't they open for Buck Howdy & BB on their last nationwide tour?

My new vote is for the Nyak hospital. My wife went OTB on 9w this summer, they have the best people working in their emergency room, stitched her up with barely any scars. And they have this crazy policy in the ER. "You will be seen in 30 min or less" I live in manhattan, St. Vincents has a similar policy "You will be seen in 30 hours or less".

Next time I crash in the city, I'll just take a $100 cab ride up to Nyak for the emergency room. It'll be faster and better care. Nyak Hostpital +1

I'd vote, but, Mt. Doom scares me. Frankly, I always thought Zeus would've been better looking.

Actually I think their policy is that if you can't spell Nyack properly they let you die on the street outside the ER entrance.

The town of Nyack

Village. the Village of Nyack. Antique shopping is probably the biggest thing to do in Nyack (Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward frequent the village). Very good bar scene back in the '80's. A little band called Phish used to stop by and play there.

Strong soccer team that used the kick the snot out of my high school.

Rosie used to live in the house previously owned by Helen Hayes.

Village. the Village of Nyack. Getting hammered is probably the biggest thing to do in Nyack.

Fixed.

That was always my perspective, but then, I frequented Nyack in my party days.

Those days are friggin OVER. I still wind up hammered in Nyack, but it's a different type of hammered all together. Ironically, I take the same Advil afterwards.

No wonder I couldn't find it on google maps!! :roflmao2: Sorry english is my second language, drunken mumblings are my first. Btw (did I spell that right?), they have a really nice bench outside of their ER with great landscaping. Better place to die than the pee covered curb on 7th ave.

Rosie used to live in the house previously owned by Helen Hayes.

Guess I'm showing my age: I was gonna say Helen Hayes is -- well, was -- Nyack's most notable resident.

I spent my formative years in West Nyack. Nyack's biggest attraction to me was The Office, a small jazz club on Main Street owned by Jackie DiPietro. Sadly gone now. As is the midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at the theater up the street, I presume.

I am only barely aware of the name "Coheed & Cambria" and if I were asked who they were in a Jeopardy Lighting Round I probably would've guessed a pair of CBS News commentators. In hindsight, I guess I do recall seing their name mentioned in some indie rock fanzines. Certainly never knew they hailed from Nyack.

And I've never done the Nyack Ride, though if I can ever convince myself to drag my sorry ass out of bed early enough to ride the 20 miles to the start, I might give it a shot. From PCad's descriptions it sounds like Gimbels West, which can only be a good thing. A painful thing perhaps, but still a good thing.

Actually, it's harder than many of the races I participate in. Which may mean those are Wussy races, but there it is.

This is a typical weekend day at the Runcible Spoon bakery in Nyack. They have lots of bike racks, goodies to munch on, water for water bottles and a bathroom.

I also vote for the Runcible Spoon. I think most of the residents wish Rosie would leave again. I believe Jonathon Demme also lives there, though maybe in Upper Nyack (different adjoining town).

Wasn't it not all that long ago that all the Nyack locals decided to fight with each other?

Geez, I thought Rosie & her gaggle of 47 kids and the weekend population of middle-aged men wearing spandex was bad enough. Now I find out that Nyack birthed silly prog-metal & was a safe haven for a jam band?!

Next time through there I'm running ALL the lights.
