Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Why????

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Why on Earth can't all you bike snobs get off your high horses and just be glad of the fact that such a huge trend is something like cycling? most people who ride these bikes would not otherwise, or would be really worried about not being 'cool'.
So now they can get on their bikes, save money and save our planet while still not being seen as weird/cheap/uncool by their friends or society.
Stop pettying over look/fashion/'cool'/'uncool' when the fact of the matter is, regardless of all that balls, people are finally making moves to protect the environment, intentionally or not, at a time when it is more important that this happens than ever before.
who cares if they're riding bikes to impress their friends, or to do tricks or whatever. its a much needed mode of transport that doesn't spit out damaging stuff that the more people we can get using the better.
discuss.

as far as i can tell more people are riding bikes because it's a trend than were riding bikes before. i'd rather these thousands rode bikes (whatever their reason) than drive cars (SUV's) to work/other everyday

+1 million OP! It's still a small trend, but a good trend none the less. If we could get people off the stupid car mod trend then that would be nice. I'm sorry my city ever came up with that blasted bone burning contraption.

Yes and no. Biking is by no means clean. Lubes, parts manufacturing, etc, are not green.
However, once they're built, I don't think they continue to **** the earth quite as badly as an auto does.
Also, working in a shop, I hear "gas prices suck" more than "I want to be good to the earth". It's selfish and greedy still, but at least they're not driving.

I have a theory that the rising price of gas is making the US (especially the East Coast) more European-like. Bike riding is up. My city's 15-odd bike shops are thriving. The city is creating more greenways and biking is getting safer. Drivers are more used to bikers and have decreased the hatin'.
I like it.

+1 for biking. Most people don't realize that most of their gas is being wasted in shorter trips that they can do on a bike. We're always going to need cars but if people would at least ride to run errands within 2 miles of home they would help out the environment a lot as well as their own health.
Not to mention less demand for gas and fewer cars on the road is always a positive thing IMO.

So many riding fixies just for the look.
It's pathetic, they don't even do it for the love of having your legs be in complete control. Just to show off.
I've literally heard someone say "I was skidding around a corner to show off to my pahtnahs..."

please tell me you're joking... did you even read the ****ing thread? you're completely missing the point. you're exactly the type of ignorant ****head that the OP was complaining about. his point was that everyone should just let other people do what they do without judging their reasons. you just said the exact opposite, while thinking you were agreeing with him. i'm actually astounded by the irony.

Dude, I'll take your rant seriously when I start seeing old people, your Dad, School teachers, and regular kids riding bikes around the city. When I see everyday people riding bikes around the city. Folks of all classes and ages/gender using a simple, revolutionary method of transportation.
I like Fixies, and I believe in their potential to change commuting in the city. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, it stopped being about a sensible, cheap, efficient way to travel around the city, and became this pathetic parade of Anodized, Aerospoke riding, NJS worshipping, Heterosexual middle-class males aping skateboarding fashion with the intention to market to other young impressionable kids involved in Fixie forums to learn about riding brakeless and looking cool, and nitpicking one another over little fixie faux-pas. Resulting in overly sensitive kids with scrambled ideals.
Now, where's your rage on that?

I like pie. Do you like pie? I think my favorite is apple pie; with some ice cream on the side. Some people like cheddar cheese with their apple pie.
A big slice of warm cherry pie with a glass of Ramos Pinto tawny port is a very good thing on a cold winter evening.

Because the only think I'm "snobby" about is proper adjustment, safety, and the trashing of beautiful and rare vintage frames for ****ty, trendy conversions.
Whenever I see something like this:

I'm gonna say something.
Whenever I see a bike with a saddle that looks like it's trying to impersonate a Stuka Dive Bomber, I'm gonna say something.
Whenever I see a fixed bike with no brakes and no foot retention, or a freewheel with one brake, or bum bars, or brake levers mounted backwards, I'm gonna say something.
And it's not going to be nice.

**** you...seriously. Get over yourself and your holier-than-thou vintage holy-relic worshipping attitude. Who gives a **** what people do to their bikes. If its not your bike, then its none of your damn business. Frames are a bunch of joined tubes meant to be ridden, not preserved for all eternity. Its better than tossing them in the dumpster or rusting in a garage, which is where they probably would otherwise end up.

funny you say that.
actually my dad does ride his bike to work. in fact both my parents do. when i ride to college i often see a number of teachers from my old secondary school riding there. what i'm saying is where i live nobody rides bikes for the fashion. fixed gear is not a fashion where i live. there must be about upwards of about 30 people in Great Britain's second city riding bikes because it is fashionable. if bikes became fashion here a boat load more people would ride them, which i think is great and would do wonders for my city, even if peoples reason for doing it is to look good. all you people who's cities and towns are swamped with fixie riders, just thank that they are on bikes not in cars, even if they are only doing it to look good.

Well, I don't know Dave Russell, but in this case I suspect he, for one, would give a ****. It's one thing to do this to a Schwinn World, but this treatment shows no respect for individual craftsmanship. And no, I'm not talking about making it a fixed gear.
Surely there are plenty of reasonable possibilities between anarchist pink and the dumpster.

Eh...A frame can be appreciated in many ways. I don't personally understand or appreciate the whole aerospoke-riser (etc.) look, but the pink version actually looks more practical and will probably get more use than if it was kept in its original configuration. Its presumptuous of you to assume that D. Russell (whoever that is) would care. Perhaps he would appreciate that the frame is still in use. At any rate, the person who owns the bike can do whatever they want despite what anyone else may think. Theres no point in (Jabba D.) threatening to flame people because they put an aerospoke and risers on a classic frame or whatever.

so i was kinda stoaked when gas prices here got to near $5 a gallon, and i started to see a bicycling renassance where more and more people were riding their bikes, even if they did add on an electric assist moter. now that prices are coming back down for gas, i fear that people are going back to four wheels and what might have been, may never be. kinda sad when it takes high gas prices for us to say "lets save the enviorment" and get on a bike for transportation, when we should have been saying that the whole time. eventualy, we will reap what we have sown.

The trendy nature of the scene sucks for the following reasons-
Instead of being about not supporting corporations, recycling, and sticking it to the oil companies, it's now about consumerism, spending massive amounts of money on your bike, and buying new and better things all the time, which totally defeats the purpose
Also, the clique-y, fashion orientated nature of people riding track bikes makes it look like some hipster subculture, which intimadates and biases people against bikes and bikers, especially when you get a bunch of snotty idiots trying to look cool and riding like jack-asses, and in general being aloof ****bags.
Also, anytime any sub-culture becomes over-refined and rigid in its norms, there is a backlash against that culture. You see all these people getting into scooters and mopeds and motorcycles now? Those use gas.
Also, blah blah blah
also, I suck
