Northern California - Knee replacement training Oct 4 or 5

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Here is a ride I came up with as a precursor to the Santa Cruz Mountains Knee Replacement. It's 86 miles and 10,400' climbing. Includes Montebello, Redwood Gulch, BOB to the top, Moody, Golden Oak, Tres Hombres of pain, OLH. An option could also include heading down 84 to Tripp for one last 20% hurt fest up Summit Springs. This one is not too far off the beaten path so refueling stops can be had.

I was thinking of doing the Diablo Challenge, but why spend $60 when I can do this madness for free!
Low Key Hill Climb site is down for some reason. Wasn't Quimby on the 4th though??

Ramon...
Looks like Low Key is doing Montebello on the 4th. So we should try to avoid that climb around 10-11 am on the 4th, so we don't run into the race.
We can either do it Sunday instead or depending on the start hit it up after Bohlman on the way back. Pete, are you in for this?

;)
Better not. I'm rolling a d20 the night before to decide which bike to ride.
Sunday is also the day of the Mt. Diablo race. 4k vs 11k, pick your suffering.

Id rather suffer for the price of a Caltrain ticket...What time for sure?
The devil would like to know...
Sunday is also the day of the Mt. Diablo race.Yikes, I'd better get Diablo out of the way on Saturday, then. No way I could participate in anything referred to as a "race". Heh.

I think I'm going to do Kennedy, Shannon, and Hicks. Not ready for replace my knee quite yet.
What time can you guys get down here? The route is pretty long so an earlier start would be better. This route is full of surprises.

What time do you think you'll hit OLH? The rest of us could feel fast for once. :p

Hmmm... I mean I can take the car down. Pete can you get to my place somehow?
Earliest Caltrain doesn't roll into Mtn View until 9:14 AM.
9:30 start would mean it getting dark/late by finish.
We have to start at like 7:30 ish I think (8 at the latest).

I actually saw them huffing and puffing getting to the top of OLH a couple of weeks ago. I should have had my camera on video ... that was a once in a lifetime viewing.
That ride didn't include those first three great white teeth either.

The logistics of this almost work for me. I need to teach in Palo Alto at 3:00.
If there are any of you that might be thinking of dropping out early whose shower I could bum and live nearby I'd be into it. I could give Pete a ride down in the morning.

That's only because you don't normally see me as soon as I get to the top. I am usually always blasted at the top of OLH, since I always give it a hard effort. To me it's like the perfect TT hill. You can actually put out some serious power (and for a decent amount of time), unlike the steep crazy climbs which you are just trying to go forward. :twitchy: On OLH I usually keep my HR around low 180s, I just like to push it on that hill.
When we pulled our 27 min on the tandem (which felt harder than the 21 on my single), I looked like I was going to keel over. Mainly because we sprinted to the top around the mailbox section to get the best time we could.

No problem, I'm still dependent on being able to get cleaned up and presentable by 3:00 in Palo Alto though. Be prepared to make other plans if I don't make it.
Looks like I would bail when we come back to Homestead after Bohlman, I'm not sure I would have time to make it up La Honda. Depends on what time we start though.

Making it home on my own is no prob.
I actually saw them huffing and puffing getting to the top of OLH a couple of weeks ago.Was this the fourth repeat, or just... the third?!

Mainly because we sprinted to the top around the mailbox section to get the best time we could. It's so cruel that the road surface on last few hundred yards is so torn up. You get to that point, knowing the end is near, and you want to give that last push, but on the other hand you don't want to die... :P
[edit: Well damn, I was planning on a three bears run this weekend, but now I want to do something involving Old La Honda. Why can't weekends be longer? And closer (both chronologically and physically)?]
What time does everyone want to get started?

I'm considering joining in. I haven't ridden the bike in awhile (out of town, lazy, etc), so I'm not really prepared, but at least it's near home so I can bail if I have to.

Hey BTW remind me...I owe you a coffee and scone for the Painting quiz!
Well I just got back from riding up Bohlman/On Orbit/Bohlman to the end sign. You guys are really going to hate me Sunday because I hate me right now. And those two little innocent spikes in between the big shark teeth are like little goblins shoving daggers into your legs.

We can call you when we get to the tres hombres off of Alpine. I figure by the time we finish them and get over to Portola Valley would be sufficient time to get to OLH.

Gonna have to bail on the ride guys. Too much going on in the afternoon that I have to get back for and the logistics for an early start will be too much at this point...Have a great time though. I'm thinking about finally taking the langster to the summit of Tam. It will be good practice for the Off road BF ride coming up.

Oh yeah ... we'll see about that! :D
In an effort to force myself to get better at climbing out of the saddle I changed the gearing on the carbon bike. 50/36 11-25. I hope I don't regret that halfway through the ride. I've done all the climbs (except Summit Springs) with this setup but not in the same ride.
