Bicycle Mechanics - Shimano STI & Rear Derailluer action-3 cogs per shift!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm new to STI. Sometimes the RD skips a gear - I thought - an adjustment - I thought! WRONG.......I finally was able to dowload the RD adjustment info from the Shimano site AND print it with Font 10. Guess what? With STI you can shift 1, 2 or 3 gears - your choice. It's designed that way. I know all you gearheads already know this but some newbies might not.

Did you also know that the front has trim (half) shifts? On a double, there are two positions for each chain ring. This allow you to do a half shift on the front derailuer to stop the chain from rubbing.
For a triple there is one for the small ring, two for the middle, and one for the large.

Alas, Campy Ergo can also upshift multiple cogs.

meh, whats the point of upshifting multiple gears? when my upshifting is limited to how fast my finger moves, it gives a bit of time for my legs to "spin up" I'm not bashing campy, but that seems like a feature I'd never use.

Well, granted, I haven't traded in my Ultegra yet.
Definitely not a must-have, but there are times. Heck, almost every time I shift from the big to small ring I have to go down two cogs.

Campy can upshift up to 3 cogs, but can downshift the whole range in one long push of the lever.

Being able to downshift three cogs can be helpful, but upshifting 3 cogs? I've never seen how this can be done with either STI or Ergo.
There used to be a difference in the R hand STI lever
between the double and triple shifters for 105 and Ultegra but this was dropped ~4yrs ago
and now there is only one STI shifter for each line
that is used for either double or triple set up. It has
four detents, with two middle detents used to position
the Fr der cage on the middle cw for inner or outer cassette rings and minimize chain rub. The middle detents move the Fr
der less than the outer detents do. Shimano did
revise their L STI to match Campy's ability to do more
than two upshifts at once. This is useful for sudden
steep hills on corncob clusters. Steve
