I currently have a 2003 xt rear dr but i want to get a spare for some bike trips this summer can I put the new 2004 xt rear dr on my bike that has a 2003 currently. I know the 2004 are opposite from the 2003. Is the 2004 any better or should I just stick to the 2003 like the one I have now. thanks

If it was me (and it's not) I'd hold out for a traditional, high gear normal, derailleur. I don't like the low gear normal ones and I don't think that they work as well particularly when your shift housing starts to collect a little wear and/or dirt.

Just curious.... would shifters for high gear normal derailleurs be compatable with low gear normal derailleurs?......or would it not matter?

They work, just backward.

You mean rapid rise?
I don't like it and I'm sorry XTR is rapid rise. Hopefully they make a choice next year.
It's all compatible

I'm betting they will. I just finished converting a Nexave equipped tandem to using a traditional derailleur and greatly improved it's shifting. At least one major bike manufacturer (Specialized) is resisting the use of rapid rise derailleurs. This isn't the first time that Shimano has tried to force one of their "better ideas" on us. Remember their Bio-Pace chainrings? They only lasted a couple of years. I'm thinking rapid rise, if it doesn't go away, will at least become an option.
